Brisbane is Australia’s most biodiverse capital city yet is experiencing extreme biodiversity loss. Major sporting events such as the 2032 Games can either further degrade or enhance biodiversity. https://bit.ly/4hptpil#Brisbane2032#Biodiversity
Engaging different sections of communities in biodiversity initiatives is key to creating sustainable outcomes, especially in a city as naturally rich as Brisbane. With the upcoming games, we have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to unite and build a nature-positive future for generations to come. Let’s protect and celebrate our environment together! #BiodiversityBrisbane #NaturePositive #SustainableFuture #CommunityAction #GreenGames #Brisbane2025 #NatureMatters #TogetherForNature

While conducting a Biodiversity Net Gain Assessment in London our surveyor came across this Common Toad (Bufo Bufo) 🐸 They are best spotted at night as they are nocturnal, living in shallow burrows and conserving energy during the day. Unfortunately, like many of the UK's native species the common toad has been impacted by loss of habitat. This has been caused by drainage of wet areas reducing the amount of wet woodland, as well as human infrastructure disrupting migration routes. However by conducting BNGs we are helping to enhance the biodiversity of habitats like this, to ensure wildlife can begin to thrive again!

🌿 Nature in Europe is in crisis. In the EU, 81% of habitats are in ‘poor’ or ‘bad condition.
We need to restore nature in order to tackle #biodiversity loss. But we must also focus on protecting the nature we already have.
Without higher allocations of #EUFunds for biodiversity restoration and conservation, the biodiversity crisis cannot be addressed.
Luckily, many successful and inspiring projects are already underway aimed at helping nature thrive. 🌱

Rebuilding Nature can help de-risk UK PLC from both climate breakdown and ecological collapse. But this requires an easily communicable strategic vision for genuine large-scale nature restoration in the name of economic and social resilience .
The message that this is now a "must" cannot be delivered by conservationists like me, or conservation bodies like those I’ve worked for all my life. It needs to come from others who decision-makers might actually listen to.
It’s time for the private sector, led by senior individuals who get it, from all sectors of the economy to sell a nature positive agenda based on the financial and wellbeing benefits that will be delivered IF we treat nature as nationally significant infrastructure.
Government spending won’t be enough, or be deployed fast enough, to seize the massive economic opportunity there is in Rebuilding Nature. Emerging nature markets can help if they’re high integrity and based on UK native habitat restoration (e.g. Wilder Carbon). But seizing opportunities to save money or reduce business risks by investing directly in restoration of UK ecosystems is equally powerful.
Whether you’re an insurer faced with spiralling climate-related claims; a bank trying to reduce your carbon footprint; a pension-provider looking for greener returns; or a supermarket worried about your supply chain; or you're buying carbon credits or Biodiversity Net Gain units; or just want maximise the bang for your ESG buck, having clear line of sight that your investment is focused in strategic UK geographies that provide scaled co-benefits is empowering.
This where a Strategic Nature Network comes in. It would build on local ground-up initiatives providing the UK with climate-proofed natural infrastructure. It would enable ecosystem engineers like bison, boar and beaver to range freely creating the dynamic conditions nature needs to thrive. Wildlife is the mechanism and the beneficiary. But this is about securing the ecosystem services on which we, humans, all rely including nutritious food and clean water. And it is entirely do-able if we want to do it.
So this is why it’s great to be working with people like Stephen Elderkin – as well as others across the private sector - to formulate an initiative that gives corporates the ability to speak out in favour of Rebuilding Nature, whilst linking them directly to projects that they can support now [including #WilderBlean: https://lnkd.in/eg5e4FWn].
So watch this space and get in touch with Steve or I if you want to find out more and get involved in the alliance we're building.

In case you missed it, the 22 of May was International Day for Biological Diversity. At #WEG, we understand the vital importance of biodiversity and strive to integrate sustainable management practices into our operations.
With approximately 5,598 hectares of vegetation and native forests in the Atlantic Forest biome, we contribute to the preservation of biodiversity. Our forests are not only natural habitats but also ecological corridors that support the protection and maintenance of fauna and flora.
Protecting and valuing life on our planet is essential.

A healthy ecosystem is the back drop for profitable and sustainable farms. I know many producers that not only grow safe high quality food but who also strive to reduce biodiversity loss.
With ECCC’s launch of a new Nature Accountability Bill, I would love to hear examples of how producers balance biodiversity considerations with profitability and many other important business decisions. What is working? What are the challenges and barriers that get in the way?
Today, Minister Guilbeault unveiled Canada’s 2030 Nature Strategy and announced the introduction of the Nature Accountability Bill in Parliament.
Nature is core to Canada’s national identity, and our Canadian businesses rely on healthy ecosystems to deliver their products and services. Urgent action is needed to safeguard nature –and halt and reverse biodiversity loss. The 2030 Strategy and the bill provide a roadmap for Canada to meet its commitments under the Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework. 🌳 🦉 🐞
