May is #LupusAwarenessMonth! A 2023 article published in American College of Rheumatology reviews the complex association between systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and social determinants of health, which contribute to health inequities. For instance, financial instability and lower educational attainment, which are observed predominantly among SLE patients from historically underrepresented minority groups, are correlated with poorer disease outcomes and diminished access to healthcare.
