What you hear depends on who you ask! The evidence shown in our recent publication in Nurse Leader indicates a continued perception gap in how direct care nurses (DCNs) and frontline nurse managers (FNMs) view many components of nurse work environments. Additionally, it shows that FNMs significantly influence DCNs’ job satisfaction, likelihood of recommending employment in their unit, and intent to leave. For organizations, this requires that they provide resources, education, and support for both DCNs and FNMs. For DCNs and FNMs, this means learning about each other’s perceptions in order to have a shared accurate picture of the current environment so that it can be improved. As a nurse leader, educator and nurse researcher it is important to disseminate the work that we do which impacts nursing, and the healthcare organization as a whole. A Professional Nurse Advancement Program is one intervention medical centers could implement to reinforce the professional role of the bedside nurse and the nurse as a caregiver. For nurses to be taken seriously, we have to take ourselves seriously. Recently, a facility decided to apply for a new nurse-driven program. There's an application process, it's supposed to increase nurse satisfaction, etc, whatever. There is a coloring competition. 🎨 I'm not kidding. Instead of promoting nurses in media, nurses authoring peer-reviewed publications, or nurses speaking at conferences, they promote a coloring page. But hey, winning unit gets a catered lunch. Who will take us seriously if that's what we think nurses want to do in order to promote their profession? Nurses are some of the brightest, most intelligent, capable, and intuitive people I know. EP 96: The New RN, David Dovell! If you are a #student #nurse or a new RN, Dave Dovell is someone you should know. Dave is a registered nurse working on a Progressive Care Unit, with a diverse work history that includes being an executive chef, an educator, working in the 911 system and the emergency room. And his story of why he became a nurse? Let’s just say it will put you in an, “I’m not crying, you're crying” situation. Dave is known as the New RN and his Instagram is chock full of nursing hacks, study tips, and nursing stories to help the new nurse transition to the new role. According to the American Nurses Association, almost 18% of new nurses leave the profession within a year due to stressful working conditions, lack of leadership and supervision, and understaffed facilities. Dave's book, Brand New Nurse: Surviving Your First Day on the Job, should be mandatory reading for all new nurses as it covers topics like transitioning to night shift, professionalism, communication, organization, and time management. These are aspects that nurses don't learn in school. However, it's also a valuable read for seasoned nurses because whether you've been a nurse for two years or twenty-two years, you can probably recall feeling unsure, inept, disorganized, and exhausted during your first weeks and months on the job. This is one of the better reports on the Nursing profession. We all know RN's are great and they are the lifeblood of the industry. This article shows that RN's are mostly happy with the career decision they have made. Now we must make sure they are treated and compensated fairly...some are and some are not. Here is a quote from the article: "When asked how long they had worked in the nursing profession, 4% said one to five years, 11% said six to 10 years, 32% said 11 to 20 years and 53% said 21 years or more." https://lnkd.in/gd-MZWDS
