WHAT TO DO ABOUT THIS HEAT WAVE. The current weather anomaly and heat wave we are experiencing in this part of the world is the product of our unsustainable practices. Ways to survive and reverse this weather condition: 1. Stop using fuel generator: Not only is it contributing to the greenhouse gas emissions which consequently leads to climate change, it is also VERY expensive. There are better, and cheaper alternatives to the fuel generators such as Solar power stations, the initial cost might look burdensome, but in the long run it is more cost effective compared to fuel generators, and there is the #SUNWISE project that allows you pay as little as 2,000 naira daily while you have access to the power station. Stop burning wastes: the relationship between the smoke emitted from burning wastes/other materials and ozone layer depletion is very direct, and it leads to climate change which is responsible for the heatwave we are currently experiencing. 3. Go out only when necessary: If you can avoid driving (Internal Combustion Engine(ICE) vehicles), please do, it is our contribution to making our society safer and better. I understand we all need to move around to get things done and that is totally valid, but whenever you feel you can do without going out it will be a drop of many drops to make an ocean. More and more of us are experiencing extreme weather 🌬☀🥶 In Berlin, our latest cold snap hit -10 during the day. Catching up with my colleague Joakim Lagerholm last week, we discussed Finland’s latest cold weather -15 Celsius in parts of the country and -40 in others.   Dealing with these temperatures is one thing, but the challenge of meeting energy demand in these unexpected scenarios is another. It means energy prices fluctuate as providers look to ensure market balance. According to Reuters, for customers in Finland who have an electricity contract following spot prices, their bill could have been 20 times higher than on an average day. ⚡    How do we combat this? Well, from my perspective, changing weather patterns mean we have to further diversify our energy mix, encourage cross-border energy sharing with neighbours and most importantly, find ways to store excess renewable energy generation, for times when we need it most.   As our seasons continue to change due to global warming, a multi-vector energy system, underpinned by storage has to be the way to help every nation both meet their energy needs and decarbonise. A challenge with many variables Franziska Weiss!   January the 5th was truly an extraordinary day. We had a long period of very cold weather 🥶 ( thumb rule: every additional minus degree adds some 100-150 MW consumption) in combinations with some faults in conventional power plants and low production of renewables. Electricity bill for that one day was for many families over 100 EUR if you are living in an electrically heated house, like many Finns are. My electricity cost was around 75 EUR for that day. 💸💸💸   Sound horrible, right? 😱   Well its not that bad, actually   The average spot price for electricity in Finland in 2023 was around 7 c/kWh. ⚡ Compared to many other European markets that would be considered cheap. It is true that the fluctuation is a lot higher these days. This is driven by the fact that renewable production is of course fluctuating and that many conventional and polluting powerplants have been shut down. 💨   Good thing on this is that the technology is there to start mitigating this, ex. using Peaker power plant (ex. Hydrogen ready gas turbines) or different possibilities for storage 🔋 (batteries, compressed air, many different possibilities out there) or simply to start adjusting the consumption  (like I did that day) 🔦. And if the risk of fluctuating prices worries you too much then you can do as the large majority of the Finnish households and have a fixed price electricity contract, that would be between around 10 c/kWh.   For now, I will stay with the spot prices and continue to enjoy the real winter that we are having this year ❄️⛷️☃️

US electricity demand grew massively in the first 6 months of 2024, according to a recent article in 'Inside Climate News': https://lnkd.in/gAx5KXJT The article also says that this growth was often met by increased fossil fuels generation, undermining the climate benefits of a large increase in solar power generation. This may be 'pissing in the wind' - pardon my French. But can those of us who have access to outdoor space - please dry our laundry OUTSIDE? At least when the weather makes that possible? This is direct solar (and solar-induced wind) power - not needing any mitigating technologies, other than a washing line, clothes pegs & the patience to take the time to do it. It makes me crazy that the vast majority my neighbours in Arizona (where at least 8 months of the year have a significant number of 'good laundry drying days' (and that's at 7000 ft asl - the drying season is almost year round in the deserts) mindlessly use tumble dryers. "I don't have time" I hear some of you say. Make time. Turn hanging out and bringing in laundry from a chore into positive, soothing, meditative breaks in the day. Your mental health, your electricity bill - and the planet's atmosphere will all benefit. Solar panels can reduce CO2 emissions more than trees. 👇 Claims like this look just at CO2. When we have this reduced view we miss a lot of the damage we do to nature. The first thing is to look at albedo. Albedo is the reflectivity that a surface has or how much energy coming from the sun is reflected back to the atmosphere. ☀️ This has a big impact as too much energy is retained as heat at the surface. Heat at the surface produces infrared energy that will go back into the atmosphere & be captured by CO2. The result - increasing atmospheric temperature. Not really helping us to solve climate change, right? Imagine doing this for 25 to 30 years. That is the lifespan of solar panels. What to do instead ? Combine solar panels with Greenery, as it 1. Reduces the heat 2. Reduces the risk of overheating for solar panels 3. Increases their efficiency 4. Creates space for biodiversity while 5. Producing oxygen PS: Have you seen such solar panels ?
