In 2001, riding the wave of the new millennium, KATOWICE became the epicenter of global innovation and cooperation. The International Mining, Energy, Metallurgy and Chemistry Fair brought together more than 550 exhibitors from 23 countries, transforming Silesia's industrial landscape into a dynamic forum for discussing the future of technology and industry. It was a time when Silesia's local aspirations met global challenges, creating a unique space for dialog and innovation. As Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek recalled, the value of the event translated into a powerful affirmation of the fair's stature on the international stage. Jan Hoppe, then Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Katowice International Fair, emphasized the growing importance of the energy and chemical sectors, which testifies to the development and economic diversification of the region. Marshal Jan Olbrycht added that the stereotypes of Silesia as an exclusively industrial region are now a thing of the past. Thus, KATOWICE 2001 was not only a celebration of technology, but first and foremost a witness to the birth of a new era, where tradition meets innovation and stereotypes give way to new possibilities. Did you know that in 1987 Polish heavy industry began its bold journey onto the world stage? 🌍 SIMMEX '87 not only brought together more than 300 exhibitors from 14 countries, including giants such as Voest Alpine and Siemens, but also transformed Katowice into an international platform for industry dialogue. 🤝 This edition of the fair is proof of how open to the world Polish innovation can be. But it is not just the numbers that are impressive. The interview took place against the background of the 2023 announcement by the Swedish state-owned company LKAB about the discovery of the Per Geijer rare-earth deposit in the Arctic town of Kiruna, Sweden. The interview was recorded in Sep’ 2023 during the shooting of the documentary “Made in Europe: from mine to electric vehicle”. One of the highlights is the visit to LKAB’s underground iron ore mine and the adjacent Per Geijer deposit. Jones got the rare opportunity to conduct an in-depth interview with one of Sweden’s key players in the domain of #criticalrawmaterials, i.e. LKAB’s Jan Moström. Jones asks Moström to elaborate on the Per Geijer roadmap to REE production. How can mining be done in a responsible way? The role of public acceptance, also by the indigenous Sami population, is discussed in detail, along with the permitting issue. The conversation is broadened to how Europe can become less dependent on China et al. for strategic metals for the #cleanenergytransition. Moström and Jones discuss how the European #CriticalRawMaterialsAct can support this transition towards strategic autonomy. Not just 'a conference'...Benchmark's 'Giga Europe' was more akin to a workshop for the mining industry to hook up with investors, automotive players, and the energy industry - amongst a few others! Here's a 60 second glimpse of the 2 days I've just spent in Stockholm with the Benchmark Mineral Intelligence 'family and friends'! For a sexagenarian like me to be in the company of young and ambitious entrepreneurs, strident start-ups, and the industry's movers and shakers...was truly energising. It's good to get out of the office...especially if it's actually a shed! And it's all well and good discussing problems, but the thread that ran through it all was about identifying solutions and finding collaborative partners. Keynote presentations were followed up with either fireside chats and panel sessions to flesh out what had just been shown - and audience Q&A was an integral part of it all too! (my top tip for all events is to fully celebrate audience participation and studiously avoid those 5 rushed minutes at the end where 1 or 2 questions get grudgingly shoved in) Onstage and off, I'll reconcile all that I've learned of late in attending industry gatherings in Geneva, Brussels, and now this one in Stockholm - when I'm up in Oslo April 4th and 5th for The Nordic EV Summit. The 19th century was powered by coal, the 20th by oil, and the 21st… will be powered by (rare earth) metals. Whether you buy the mining lobby’s claim that we’ll need to mine as many metals in the next 30 years as we have mined since the start of human civilisation or not, it’s pretty clear: to decarbonise, we’ll needs lots of them. What role will Europe play? With few new mines and processing and refinement capacity virtually gone, we’ll have to make some though choices. Storyrunner followed professor Peter Tom Jones from the KU Leuven on his journey to investigate if and how Europe can set up its own, fully integrated, mine-to-EV value chain.
