Talking about Nordic heavy metal!! Yesterday, thyssenkrupp nucera and H2 Green Steel hosted a discussion and networking reception at the Swedish Embassy in Berlin to celebrate our recent agreement for the delivery of a 700 MW alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) plant to produce #GreenSteel in Sweden. Also in the building: an exhibit on heavy metal music from the Nordics. There could not be a better fitting scenery to discussing our cooperation for our green heavy metal – steel – project together with H2GS. Thank you Jenny Lennung Malmqvist for your warm welcome on behalf of the Swedic Embassey! Kudos to our moderator Kirsten Westphal, keynote speakers Daria Nochevnik and Ruud Kempener, and my fellow panelists Maria Persson Gulda, Dr. Christine Falken-Großer, Till Mansmann, and Tudor Constantinescu. My key takeaways: 1.      Strong coordination is required. It’s essential to look at Europe as if it was one country. Standardized certifications, cross-border infrastructure and collaboration on supply and offtake and a truly European idea of creating one integrated market is the only way forward. 2.      Everything needs to be focused on large-scale projects. Upscaling technology from a 2 MW test facility a few years ago to our standard 20 MW module scalum® and Giga-projects. It’s not scary if you have the DNA like we do in our company on how to handle large-scale electrolyzers and deliver industrial sizes, it’s the necessary technology innovation. 3.      Education and people development is key: Roughly 3 Mio. new jobs in Europe will be created in the transformation process to becoming a hydrogen-fueled industry. “The copper melt started slam-dancing!”🕺– this is how Torben Edens, Head of New Technologies at Aurubis, described the moment he introduced hydrogen into the anode furnace in Aurubis copper production during testing. Natural gas is generally used in production, but we’re systematically gearing up for the hydrogen age – a fuel playing an important role along the path to carbon neutrality – to curb the CO2 generated in manufacturing our metals even further. Even if hydrogen is not yet available at internationally competitive market prices and policymakers still need to address some key issues. 🔬 Torben Edens and his team looked into what this might look like in practice: Experts blew various hydrogen concentrations into the anode furnace a total of 14 times during ongoing operations at the Aurubis Hamburg plant. The result: It works! Aurubis can also use hydrogen to make pure copper – and did, just under 3,700 tons during the test series. ✅ Findings in hand, Aurubis is moving forward: We’re installing a new generation of H2-ready anode furnaces – so we’ll be able to use hydrogen instead of natural gas in the future. 🏗️ Installing the two gigantic, 110-ton furnaces in our primary smelter is a logistical tour de force and we’re looking forward to seeing them in operation come July. The new furnaces will take the slam out of the dancing and last longer. Hydrogen is less dense than natural gas, so the large furnaces allow the hydrogen to be more evenly distributed. 💚 The € 40 million investment is an important step towards carbon neutrality, the new furnace area's H2 readiness is completely designed by Aurubis. Hamburg - Aurubis, the largest copper producer in Europe, has swapped out its anode furnaces at the Hamburg facility with new, innovative furnaces that are hydrogen-ready. "Using only hydrogen as a reduction agent at the Hamburg site, this € 40 million investment will allow the company to prevent at least 5,000 t of CO2 a year." "Aurubis also invested around € 100 million in laying the technical groundwork for feeding more carbon-free industrial heat into Hamburg’s district heating network. Aurubis has been supplying heat since 2018 and with the addition of the second stage, the multimetal company can now heat a total of up to 28,000 households in Hamburg as of the 2024/25 heating period. 🙌 An exciting visit: As part of the North Rhine-Westphalian IN4climate.NRW initiative, representatives from business and science discussed the current challenges in carbon capture & storage (CCU/CCS) at the thyssenkrupp Polysius communications center on September 14. 💡 After introducing the plant manufacturers thyssenkrupp Polysius and thyssenkrupp Uhde, the focus was on topics such as the requirements of separation plant technology, the approval process in the Netherlands and the allocation of plant components under approval law. The initiative, which was launched by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Innovation, Climate Action and Energy of North Rhine-Westphalia, aims to ensure a competitive and at the same time climate-neutral industrial location.
