In a post-COVID year where activity reached significant production levels, the European continent is decivisely moving away from fossile fuels in its electricity footprint. Soon the continent will be stopping importing energy and will generate a low-carbon one. This confirms all the merits of the on-going work to build a very strong ecosystem to promote a major shift toward e-mobility. At Prologium Technology 輝能科技 we embrace this movement and are willing to concretely contribute toward this noble goal. By leading the development of the next generation batteries, by flexing our manufacturing muscles through the world’s first giga-level solid state battery factory grand opening (this January 2024), we are preparing for a significant move to Dunkirk-France home of our future large scale Giga-Factory. Each step requires the mastery of specific #technologies and #market conditions to be successful in the business. We recommend our readers to have a look at the recent reports published by MP Materials and Lynas Rare Earths Ltd, the two main rare-earth #producers outside China. From the #REIA stakeholder network, we often receive questions such as why MP Materials sells its #concentrate to China instead of producing all individual rare-earth #oxides in the #USA, or why Lynas cannot so easily scale up their operations including #separation of heavy rare earths. This is largely for the same reasons previously highlighted. However, both companies are working to scale their #business and to moving #downstream in the value chain. But moving from mine to oxide is only part of the story and transforming the #oxides to #metals, alloying them, and making #magnets is even more #challenging.  Key issues for this sector to consider in order to succeed include the importance of integrating new #business models considering both #circularity and vertical integration; #government support for de-risking #investments; increased #traceability requirements; and the pivotal active role to be played by the downstream segment. Yesterday, WindEurope published its annual statistics and seven-year #outlook. The report shows that #Europe installed 18.3 GW of new wind-power capacity in 2023, a record amount, but only half of what it should be building to meet its 2030 climate and energy targets. On average, this would have required more than an estimated 10,000 tonnes of #permanentmagnets, almost half of the EU’s permanent-magnet imports last year, if all these turbines were built in the EU. In this week’s lead article Peng Wang and co-authors develop an integrated material- stock monitoring approach to quantifying the in-use stock of components and materials for offshore wind turbines in China. The study shows a 22-fold increase from 267 turbines in 2015 to 5,921 turbines by 2022. The International Energy Agency just released their "Global Hydrogen Review 2023 "with a sobering key message for the transformation towards a decarbonized world economy: "Lagging policy support and rising cost pressures put investment plans for low-emissions hydrogen at risk." So, what does it take for the hydrogen market to take off finally? For Europe, the Nordics could play a pivotal role in the continent's emerging hydrogen economy: as technology providers, producers of green industrial products, and exporters of hydrogen.
