What a great achievement for Aurubis: TIME and Statista have included Aurubis as one of the World’s Most Sustainable Companies in 2024. As a leading global provider of non-ferrous metals and one of the world’s largest copper recycler, Sustainability is part of our DNA. The $820m investment in Aurubis Richmond to build the first-of-its-kind secondary smelter for complex recycling materials in the U.S. at nearly #ZeroWaste is just one of many proof points in that regard. #Aurubis #AurubisRichmond #TomorrowMetals #Women4Metals

After a good three years of construction, we are delighted to be celebrating the relaunch of the completely overhauled tankhouse for copper production at our Aurubis Lünen recycling site. ⬆️ This € 60 million investment ensures that the tankhouse is ready for the coming decades so we can supply Europe with more strategic metals. ♻️ At Aurubis, we already process more than 1.1 million tons of recycled material today. Around 45 percent of our copper cathodes are produced from recycled materials. Without recycling, we would not be able to meet the increasing demand for raw materials. And above all: Without recycling and the circular economy, we would not be able to achieve our climate goals! 🏭 That is why Aurubis consistently invests in its existing smelters in Europe and in Germany. We want to further strengthen Europe and Germany as hubs of industry and create local, secure, and attractive jobs. For more information on our project in Lünen, watch the video below or read our press release here: https://lnkd.in/eZZFVDkS #Aurubis #MetalsforProgress #TomorrowMetals #CircularEconomy #Recycling #AntwerpDeclaration

It's disheartening to learn about the closure of Vallourec's seamless pipe production in Germany, a move driven by soaring energy prices. The shutdown, a result of the decision to close plants in Düsseldorf and Mülheim, carries a heavy toll on skilled workers and their families. To be honest this "funeral ceremony" almost brought me to tears. More skilled men, breadwinners of families, who dedicated their lives to hard work but will be declared "useless" by a society who only values hipsters who do useless shit in front of a computer. Before hastily closing down coal-fired power stations, let's take a moment to reflect. Germany, an industrial powerhouse, serves as a cautionary tale. The shift to alternative energy sources has led to skyrocketing power costs, prompting industrial giants to shutter factories. The transition must be approached with careful consideration to balance sustainability and economic implications. It's a delicate dance between environmental goals and the stability of industries. 🌐💡 Click to read : https://lnkd.in/dR6_qEU5 #EnergyTransition #sustainabilitychallenge

CEOs vs. Green Deal: The Right Path to Sustainability? Ahead of the European elections, leading executives from German companies are calling for changes to the EU Green Deal. BMW, Lufthansa, and the chemical industry are criticizing the stringent regulations and advocating for more flexible guidelines. But should we really oppose these measures, or should we embrace them to create a sustainable future that is both economically and ecologically beneficial? A positive example is the climate alliance between Aurubis and enercity in Hamburg. This partnership captures industrial waste heat from Aurubis's copper production process to supply the HafenCity Ost district with CO2-free heating. By leveraging this innovative approach, the project saves 12 million cubic meters of water annually and has the potential to reduce Germany's CO2 emissions by 37 million tons per year, according to the German Energy Agency (dena). Such initiatives highlight the potential for industrial heat projects to drive significant environmental and economic benefits. At HELIOVIS, we believe that resisting sustainable regulation is not the answer. Instead, we should see it as an opportunity to build a better, more sustainable future. Our HELIOtube technology is a step in this direction, providing industrial heating solutions that rely on renewable energy, thereby contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions. #Sustainability #GreenDeal #Innovation #HELIOVIS #RenewableEnergy #Industry4.0 #Aurubis #enercity #ShapingTheFuture #EnergyEfficiency

BASF: Part of the problem or part of the solution? With great fanfare, Dr. Martin Brudermüller finished his term as CEO of the German chemical giant BASF. Proudly, he opened the first electrically heated steam cracker, potentially lowering its operational emissions by 90%. When the technology, co-developed with SABIC and Linde, is rolled out to all of BASF´s steam crackers, it could add up to about 3Mt of CO2 savings — a great win, as it seems. The story of the article published in Nachrichten aus der Chemie gets more sobering. This new technology, with the fancy name Starbridge, will also create a fossil lock-in as steam crackers can only be fuelled with the fossil derivative naphtha: "It´s questionable if there will ever be a non-fossil material capable of replacing naphtha in these installations."* BASF has been playing this double role for decades. The impressive clean-up of its processes with ever-increasing circularity and a remarkable drop in the discharge of toxic substances into the environment is nothing but impressive- take a swim downstream of the world´s largest chemical factory if you don´t believe it;) But their continued collaborations with Wintershall Dea and Gazprom drove Germany ever deeper into dependency from Russian imports- with all the consequences that our Ukrainian friends have to suffer. Also, BASF has not given due weight to the opportunities of industrial biotechnology: "However, given BASF's four decades of involvement with biotechnology, its biotech portfolio is modest. It is hard to imagine how climate-friendly and sustainable the chemical company would be today if it had pushed ahead with the process changeover to biotechnology. But this failed due to the costs. Glucose, the number one raw material in biotechnology, and other renewable starting materials are more expensive than fossil resources." To close on a positive note, BASF has an organizational trump card up its sleeve, whose contribution to a genuine drive to sustainability can hardly be denied. An 80-person task force for sustainability reports directly to BASF´s CEO. Failure to meet its goals would reflect directly on the boss—a solid incentive to get things done. *Own translation from the German original text by Uta Neubauer. https://lnkd.in/eBEH-h3Y #chemicalindustry #climatecrisis #processtechnology
