I am truly honoured that two of my recent articles have been selected for inclusion in EJTE’s Special Issue - 'The Practicum in Initial Teacher Education: Enduring Challenges, Evolving Practices, and Future Research Directions'. The SI showcases 12 innovative studies exploring topics such as student teachers’ emotional experiences and wellbeing, mentoring and school-university partnership dynamics, and the professional development needs of teacher educators across 16 countries, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, England, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Scotland, Switzerland, Wales, and the Netherlands. These are the included contributions: 1) Identifying school-based teacher educators’ professional learning needs: An international survey - Gerry Czerniawski, Ainat Guberman, Ann MacPhail & Eline Vanassche This study, conducted with the support of the International Forum for Teacher Educator Development (InFo-TED.eu), analyses the professional learning needs of 1,680 school-based teacher educators across 12 countries. The findings indicate how much more needs to be done to recognise, address and support school-based teacher educators’ learning needs, and calls for much-needed policy attention at both national and European levels to ensure equitable support for all teacher educators. 2) Triadic mentoring through the lens of positioning theory and frame analysis - Steven Bruneel & Eline Vanassche This article is part of the dissertation of my former student, Steven Bruneel, and draws on data gathered during my Marie Curie Fellowship at the University of East London. It explores the relational dynamics within mentoring triads (student teachers, school-based mentors, and teacher educators). Results reveal four key frames: the quality assurance frame, the school-university partnership frame, the socialisation frame, and the expert teacher frame, each opening up particular positions but also closing off others. The study challenges the uncritical acceptance of the benefits of triadic mentoring, while also offering an innovative theoretical perspective for the study of its complexities. I welcome anything that encourages students from all backgrounds to apply to higher education, and UCAS dropping the personal statement from applications in place of three structured questions seems to be a good step forward. Working in Outreach for a Drama School, and particularly for Production Arts, question 2 does concern me though. "How have your qualifications and studies helped you prepare for this course and subject?" Given the deliberate erosion of creative opportunities and subjects available through state schools over the past decade and more, here's hoping our new Government will be able to reverse the damage being done as quickly as possible, to ensure all our future applicants feel equipped to answer this question as well as possible. This lack of answers many will have when (or if) considering creative arts paths is largely the reason for my job existing and the primary ignition for every project we've created and run so far, including one game-changer being publicly announced soon (which may help a little with Q2). I'm looking forward to extending the reach of the programmes we're building, alongside our generous funding partners and exceptional Access & Participation team, to ensure we find as many young people as possible and help them answer the new Q2 with every confidence.
