It’s fascinating how I got an opportunity to attend a continental conference FOR FREE! Often times, such chances to listen and learn from top players within industries come at very high charges, usually challenging for the unemployed and even some employed persons to be part of, no matter how much they would desire to. Obviously, as one who has had an opportunity to represent my employer at various Universities and colleges, as well as facilitate discussions with students in the pre- employment phase, I should know better. In the past three months, #KISM has hosted students and lecturers in procurement and supply chain from Maseno University, Kisii University, KITALE NATIONAL POLYTECHNIC and the meru national polytechnic . Of the questions they were posing, employability within the profession seemed to stand out in all the groups. As the number of students taking supply chain management courses continues to grow immensely, competitive times lie ahead. It is imperative that job seekers endeavor to develop themselves in such a way that promises value beyond what peers have to offer. Take advantage of such offers by KISM &SAPICS. The situation is so dire that our government continues to emphasize through the #BETA plan, on the need to support local sourcing. Even the #PPADA imposes a requirement to procure from #MSME’s (Mostly owned by women, youth and people living with disability-#PWD’s) through #AGPO, so that more employment opportunities can be created. In the institute, for instance, we now require our vendors to supply certain common user items that have been manufactured within the Country. Moments of uncertainty and fear try to tear us apart, and it’s in these times, I remind myself, "Maybe the Universe has better plans." My journey has been a series of unpredictable twists and turns, but looking back, I cherish a collection of the most beautiful stories. I aimed for a BTech but discovered my true calling in Literature and Economics. I recently had the honor of speaking at the Corporate Advisory Board’s (CAB) 10th meeting. It was held at Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST) University. My major focus? 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐩𝐮𝐭. For those unfamiliar, throughput refers to the number of graduates who actively serve in their industry after completing their degree. Imagine a university producing 200 software engineers, but only 10 actually find jobs in their field. That’s a throughput of just 5%... So, the real question isn’t how many graduate universities produce but how many are successfully entering the workforce. I debated vital points, including: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐩𝐮𝐭? Are they measuring how their graduates are performing in real life? 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐬 Shouldn't we be asking students why they’re choosing a specific degree and what they plan to do with it? 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲-𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 Shouldn't teachers have hands-on experience in the field they're teaching? A software engineering professor who’s not in touch with the latest trends just won’t cut it. 𝐔𝐩-𝐭𝐨-𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐮𝐦: Curriculum needs to evolve with industry standards, or else students are left behind. 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 Are we testing their abilities with real-world projects? Or are we just giving them basic tasks? This is how we can make sure that universities don’t just produce graduates but professionals who thrive in their industries.
