Ensuring that full travel costs for activists from the Global South are fully covered when they are invited to participate in events in the Global North is crucial. Often, these activists operate with limited resources and cannot afford the expenses associated with international travel. Covering their travel costs not only shows respect for their time and commitment but also ensures that diverse and important perspectives are included in global dialogues. This inclusivity is essential for addressing global issues effectively and equitably.

You’re inviting a young activist to come participate/speak/be a panelist at your event in another country, due to their experience/expertise. But you tell them to pay for their flight fare and get reimbursement when they come? How do you just assume they can afford this? How many well paying leadership roles are open to young people? There are so many issues with ‘sponsored’ travel that we do not talk about as much as we should. First of all, most fully sponsored opportunities cover flight fare, airport transfer, accommodation, per diem/food and cost of visa to be reimbursed. This is great, but do you also realize that there are associated costs beyond these 5 things? For a lot of countries here, we have to apply for visas through accredited centers like VSF, instead of embassies. This means paying for appointments and processing costs, separate from visa fees. Tfare to and fro for submissions. I’d have to gather my documents, snap passports, go to the bank for my physically stamped bank statement, etc. That all requires small small local transportation/printing costs. Then, a lot of the time, you’d travel for over 24hrs especially from the global south, with long layovers inbetween, with no provision for per diem in transit. Then, you get to your destination and sometimes, per diem for feeding is not provided on the first or second day. It takes a while due to office bureaucratic processes. This might look like small and negligible costs to you, but it is not!!! It is a struggle for so many persons. I’ve been to convenings where some of us have to wrap up food from the hotel buffet provided during breakfast, to keep in their rooms as lunch/dinner, because per diem is not immediately provided and they have no extra dime to buy food. They used all they had to travel down, while some even borrowed money to cover all these extra costs. See, I know this isn’t applicable to everybody and budgeting is quite specific and strict for many organizations but please, when inviting people especially for fully sponsored events, try to have conversations with them on all associated travel costs and where possible, try to earmark a little sum in your budget, to cover for some of these expenses ahead. This is discounting the personal preparation costs that come with traveling from your home to do something official. We can all join hands to be kinder with our processes and if possible, be the reason some of these processes are systemically changed internally, within our organizations. This message is for donors too. When providing funding, be human centered and kind! Be considerate when asking organizations to draw up budgets! We all travel and know what this means!!! And no, this is not a sense of entitlement. I want to also hold myself accountable and remind myself that for anytime I’m in the position to make these kind of decisions, I’ll be humane enough to imagine how difficult it might be for others to travel down, so, I can do better!

Bermuda has been discussing become a full caricom member. I wanted to find unbiased facts on what that would mean. This was an interesting 3 minute overview. I have done business in most of the major islands in my 20+ career in pharmaceuticals working with the major distributors, hospitals and medica clinics through the islands. During that time I could not honestly tell you who was a caricom member and who wasn’t. It actually never factored into any business transaction I was involved in. How has it impacted others in their business dealings? Curious on all advantages and disadvantages. Will it help our youth and schooling? How would it impact open residency for 6 months? Will it increase tourism. Lots of thoughts go through my mind on how we actually choose to be members or not. What’s your viewpoint or experience been in benefits?

🌷 **A Tale of Longing and Loss** 🌷 In the past, Holland was a place I called my second home. With over two decades of cherished memories and more than 14 years of work experience with Dutch companies, the bond was deep-rooted. Visa applications were a breeze, often processed within hours, thanks to the efficiency of the times. However, the winds of change have brought about a stark contrast in the present landscape. What once took mere days to secure a visa has now transformed into a waiting game that spans several weeks, a stark reminder of how the pace of life has evolved in the age of fast network communication. The recent journey to secure a visa for a much-anticipated event felt like a test of patience and resilience, unlike anything I had encountered before. The process, now laden with bureaucratic delays and unforeseen obstacles, has turned what was once a seamless experience into a labyrinth of uncertainties. The realization hit hard that the dynamics of travel had changed drastically, leaving me and my daughter, brimming with excitement for her maiden voyage to Holland, stranded in a sea of disappointment. The event we had eagerly prepared for slipped through our fingers, a casualty of the extended waiting periods and the challenges of the modern visa application process. This experience has been a poignant reminder that long associations, while filled with cherished memories, can also bring unexpected challenges. The contrast between the past and present serves as a testament to the ever-evolving nature of life and its intricate tapestry of joys and sorrows. As we navigate this journey of longing and loss, I am reminded of the resilience that comes from embracing change and finding solace in the moments shared with loved ones. Our hearts may ache for the missed opportunities, but the bond we share and the memories we hold dear will continue to guide us through the ebbs and flows of life's unpredictable course. #Longing #Loss #Resilience #LifeJourney #CherishedMemories #Holland
