Podcast: The Spitfire, the Hurricane, the Kittyhawk – when asked to name the fighter planes that won World War II, most people would place these legendary machines high on the list. Yet largely absent from these lofty histories is the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation’s CA-13 Boomerang – Australia’s home-grown fighter plane, adapted from a training aircraft design and deployed in the Pacific theatre. Though it was plagued with teething problems and never took down an enemy aircraft, the Boomerang carved out its own niche working with the Army in battlefields like the dense jungles of New Guinea. In this week’s Australian Aviation Podcast, Jake Nelson talks to Don Williams, author of The CAC Boomerang: Australia’s Own WWII Fighter, about the unique role played by the Boomerang in Australia’s aviation history – and how it can be better remembered. https://bit.ly/4hD6K1R

Thursday nights between 8-10pm EST I release a new #LateNightHistory podcast episode (which is accompanied by a short 5-minute clip on YouTube). This week featured a returning guest: US Army EOD veteran and original member of Delta Force, Mike Vining. Mike first appeared on Episode 8 where we discussed his experiences in Delta. Episode 38 focuses primarily on the history of EOD from WWII to the Gulf War. Some highlights from the episode include: 1). Controversy regarding Draper Kauffman "The Father of Navy EOD" and his first Navy Cross award. 2). Lesser known service of Army Combat Engineers alongside the Naval Combat Demolition Units on D-Day. 3). History of the famous Tunnel Rats in Vietnam/Cambodia, including Mike's experiences doing similar work, which involved crawling into small tunnels armed with only flashlights, pistols, and, in Mike's case, explosives. 4). OSS Deer Team in Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh's relationship with the US in World War II. 5). Delta Force EOD (which we also covered in Ep. 8). 6). National EOD Day on the first Saturday of May (today) and remembrance of EOD members on the EOD Memorial Wall. 7). Mike's uniform donation to the Ordnance Museum at Fort Lee (Fort Gregg-Adams) in Virginia. 8). Bunker busters, nukes, and humorous nicknames for big bombs. Please subscribe on Apple and Spotify. This action might not seem like much, but the support allows Late Night History to continue interviewing world-class guests. https://lnkd.in/eH5mhyuQ #History #MilitaryHistory #EOD #Army #OralHistory

Stuck in snow recovery tip, the make your own road method. Wheel spin is BIG NO NO. Use the moment of the vehicle, not the power of the vehicle. The trick is when the vehicle makes just a little progress STOP at the top of the little ramp you created. It takes practice. Use that ramp as moment enhancer, use the new road you created to improve your situation. Even up armored Humvees can extract themselves with a little brake/throttle control. It easier than it looks. #EARTHCRUISER #SNOW #RV #VANLIFE #ARMY #SAFTEY #TRAINING

If you have any interest and/or influence in the material readiness of our Navy you need to take time to listen to this podcast. Straight talk from fleet leaders supporting the findings of the GAO report (BTW which SECNAV staffers, flags, and senior enlisted leaders have actually read this report?!). Fleet manning shortfalls continue to negatively impact our Sailors and the material and operational readiness of the fleet. It’s time to fix the fleet’s manning problem by buying the full manpower requirement the fleet needs! #usnavy
