#HomeEquityANGELS: This is HUGE - the beginning of the end of special interest politics (aka the #RECartel) that Business Insider called a $72 billion consumer rip-off. Over next 5 years this could empower 25M+ consumers -- homebuyers and sellers - to save an estimated $100 BILLION. President Biden's goal is to deliver $10K in savings on the average sale (see, share hashtag #Save_10K on Twitter). If these reforms put money in your pocket, will you share $1K with a cause, social good or person of their choice? Think Pay-It-Forward meets real estate: https://lnkd.in/eqDqDduJ

Friday Night Takeaways – Crossroads in History: Quants, Casinos and Antitrust While history was not my forte in high school, my interest in it has blossomed over the past decade. I've come to appreciate the wisdom that lies in the challenges faced by individuals in the past, often finding solutions that resonate with the problems I wrestle with today. One fascinating aspect of delving into history is when unexpected intersections occur – moments when figures from one field make an appearance in seemingly unrelated domains. Take Claude Shannon, for instance, who, in the 1960s, frequented casinos alongside Ed Thorp. Thorp beat the casinos at their own game, and later beat the market to become the godfather of quantitative investing. This story is found in Ed Thorp's wonderful autobiography "A Man for All Markets: From Las Vegas to Wall Street, How I Beat the Dealer and the Market". Or you can look up the hour and a half movie "The Bit Player" for a more easily digestible stories about Claude Shannon, available for free on YouTube and worth every minute spent. Claude Shannon's strong ties with AT&T lead us to another historical connection involving Nobel laureate in economics, Friedrich Hayek. He was apparently considered a witness in the US v. AT&T antitrust case, a pivotal event that dismantled AT&T's monopoly in the telecommunications industry in the United States. The AT&T attorneys was trying to come up with witnesses that German born Judge Harold Greene would be sympathetic to. As described by Steve Coll in his book "The Deal of the Century: The Breakup of AT&T" the attorneys asked: what about "someone who shared Greene’s most fundamental life experience, his escape from Nazi Germany? Someone suggested a man named Frederick Heig, a scientist from Austria who had escaped the Nazis. One of the trial team lawyers finally tracked him down, but it turned out that Heig was a little hard of hearing and was not terribly distraught about the potential breakup of the Bell System." His name is misspelled in the book, but everything else fits. Hayek was unable to return to his native Austria in 1938; a political scientist; suffered damage to his hearing in his left ear fighting the first world war; and as a free market proponent had no love of monopolies. The attorneys moved on to other candidates. These historical crossovers offer a fascinating glimpse into the intricacies of life. It's a reminder that history is a rich tapestry where stories from different realms converge, providing valuable lessons and insights that continue to resonate in our present-day challenges. I hope you liked this post. If you didn't like it – thank you for reading it all the way to the end. I'll put out another takeaway next Friday.
