Monochrome Matters 🎨 When we think of ‘monochromatic interiors’, we often think of black-and-white colour schemes ⚫⚪. But the term technically refers to variations of the same colour 🌈. Two gilders. Two unique gilder's pads. These tools are often seen in traditional Frame Making workshops. A gilder will use the pad to lay, cut and pick up the gold leaf with a gilders tip (also pictured) before laying onto a carefully prepared frame. Our pads have straps on the underside to slide our non-dominant hand into (similar to an artist palette), enabling us to move around while we gild a large project and use the gilders' pad as an extension of our hand. The paper backing is optional but useful to prevent the leaf being caught and blown away by air movement. We craft our own tailor-made gilder's pads that align with our unique gilding style, the specific type of leaf regularly used, our preferred weight, and individual hand size considerations. The gilding technique shown here is traditional water-gilding- a time consuming and highly-skilled process that produces incredible results, including a mirror-like reflective burnish.
