All networking is personal. ♥️ If you learn one thing, learn this. 🤔 This is what happens when you lean into the human quality of networks. Great to see so many Atlanta tech ecosystem friends at the Startup Atlanta community lunch this week. We had some productive discussions over InnovATL 2024, Venture Atlanta Conference, and the upcoming Atlanta Startup Awards. But I wanna talk about one specific convo I had with my friend Donnie Beamer Jr., CFA. 🧐 As we were grabbing our badges at the front, Donnie asks me how my people are doing. I assumed he meant the planning for our next LinkedIn Local ATL event -- so I began to share details on that. But he stopped me and said more gingerly, "No -- your people." And in that moment I knew he was referencing the spiking Antisemitism we're living through right now. ✡️ I've been thinking about that interaction for 2 days now. It meant so much to feel acknowledged just on a human level. Whether you call it networking, community, partnerships, or something else, this is what relationship-building is about. 👏 This is the core of The Zero to One Networker: 🚀 To build long-lasting dialogues around understanding & support. Startup founders: what types of events are most helpful at an early stage, if at all? I personally am not involved with many startup-related communities, but even I get email invitations to what seems like at least one event a day here in NYC. (I cannot imagine what other founders’ calendars and Luma feeds look like!) In the early days of my startup journey, I went to as many networking / panel / mixer events as I could, thinking that there could be even the slightest bit of value from all these different events. However, I soon realized I was losing so much time simply attending all these events, initiating conversations at these gatherings, and then following up on them the next day (almost all of the conversations stop there). Nowadays, I actively try not to attend panels or networking events unless there is something very specific in value I can directly gain from one. At times, that does get me worrying about value lost from lack of serendipity. However, I feel I just don’t have enough hours in the day to get everything I need to do done and follow up on all those new conversations. Founders: how do you do it? What should I look for in events that may perhaps increase the possibility of serendipitous value? What events are valuable vs. waste of time?
