The mining industry faces cognitive dissonance, with proponents of shutdowns or strict regulation often benefiting from the technological advancements fuelled by the minerals and metals it produces. Breaking this contradictory understanding is imperative. At witan nook, showcasing advancements in sustainable mining is the pathway toward reconciling the demand for essential minerals with environmental and ethical considerations.
The mining sector's environmental record has been bleak, but change is underway. Companies like Paramount Gold Nevada Corp. (NYSE American: PZG) are leading the shift towards sustainable mining. https://lnkd.in/ehcuTnCN

Well worth reading this article on an important initative - in terms of getting clear messages from indigenous peoples on the energy transition (& in this story a focus on deep sea mining) "It’s super critical that people understand that the transition is anything but just, and anything but equitable" https://lnkd.in/dVSERBdX

Everyone is talking about #TransitionMinerals but listening to each other across communities and disciplines is something that has been in short supply. Yesterday for #NYCW, we set out to bring communities on the front lines of harms from mineral mining with leading business voices to map an equitable and responsible path forward. We were so privileged to hear from; 🔴 Joan Carling | Indigenous Peoples Rights International 🔴 Don Clemente Flores | Indigenous Leader, Cuenca de las Salinas Grandes y Laguna de Guayatayoc, Argentina 🔴 Michael Posner | NYU Stern School of Business 🔴 Kayla Winarsky McKenzie | BSR The solutions are multifaceted, and there is no quick fix; but together we identified some common themes; 🤝 FPIC and proper community consultation The first stage of any mining project should be fully informing, consulting and agreeing with the local community. This process shouldn’t be rushed, as it lays the foundation for sustainable supply. 🚫 No-Go zones and the right to say no Some places are too precious culturally or ecologically to be sacrificed to mining. ⏰ Time to go mandatory Some businesses truly are doing their best to keep injustice out of their supply chains, but regulating for standards, transparency and accountability through the supply chain makes a level playing field and brings the worst offenders into line. 🧠Traditional knowledge Communities who live close to the land are often best placed to sense stresses and suggest ways of keeping industry and nature in balance. 💰Redefining value So long as the financial gains of a project are the main driver, it will never centre human rights and the environment. We must redefine our sense of value to include nature, people, and peace. - Emily Iona Stewart , Head of Policy and EU Relations, Transition Minerals at Global Witness

“When it’s cold outside, your welcome needs to be extra warm”- said H2 Green Steel representative on the second day of our Novare Leadership Academy Executive Program #NorthInnovationTour. And it was extra warm and exciting! Some facts about a green field mega project H2 Green Steel: 300ha area, 800MW hydrogen production capacity, 70bnSEK (6,5bnEUR) CAPEX, in order to construct the most sustainable factory for steel production in the world with annual output of 5mt of green steel. It’s just very few facts about the size. But even more imprtant part is how to attract to and retain talents in the region. Boden Business Park predicts that they will need approx 10.000 various professionals to come to the region over the next decade, starting from experts in steel industry, up to the teachers, doctors, engineers, hoteliers, taxi drivers, and other. I do believe this is much more complex challenge than just building the factories itself, thus really interesting to follow how municipality and companies are tackling it!
”We decarbonize hard-to-abate industries! …and we start with steel” – H2 Green Steel H2 Green Steel is the accelerator for the Green Transition in Boden offering a lot of opportunities. But how do you take a 20 year leap in 3 years and what are the effects? Anne Graf, Head of Regional Affairs at H2GS believes that the far most important question right now for the green transition to succeed is people! To be able to take care of all the people needed and to find housing for them. We also met with jannie staffansson , Project Lead of Min Odda Giron, to learn and discuss what happens to reindeer hearding when land is taken for mining activities. How can we co-exist? Finished the day with a dinner on ice 🧊 Thank you Nils Lindh, Boden Business Park, Anne Graf, jannie staffansson and Brändön Lodge for hosting us! Petra Wigh Mia Ritsfalk Lars Häggström

Senior research and strategy leader | Sustainable futures and responsible sourcing | Critical and transition minerals | Climate finance
There are some fundamental themes in sustainable minerals and the clean energy transition here. ⚖ Even a “green” mine has negative impacts. Rural communities that are inherently sustainable, but sit atop mineral resources, pay the costs for others’ transition to sustainability. How to ensure fairness? 💰 An environmental lawsuit is being brought in the UK instead of Brazil, because the company is UK-domiciled to attract investment. A case in point for the make-or-break role of the financial sector in ensuring a just transition. 🤝 Whether causality is established between community impacts and the mine site, or not, the community fear is real. It’s not enough for a mine to be “green”, if it can’t get its stakeholders onside for the journey.
