So today is Bat Appreciation Day...who knew? Bats are fascinating, did you know, without bats, we'd say goodbye to bananas, avocados and mangoes, that night insects have the most to fear from bats(certainly not us) and that bats are the only flying mammal? As a department lead, do you sometimes feel a bit like a bat ? Busy zooming about all over the place, in the dark and winging it ? Being good operationally at your role was most probably why you were promoted to a department or team lead, right? And that's amazing but, the skills required to be a good people leader are not the same as an operational leader. You need a different set of skills and tools to succeed. If it’s within our remit; and we are the boss, it’s our responsibility to shoulder. We can observe here the NSW Minister from Agriculture and Fisheries being questioned about a breed of fish that she decided on banning retrieval of- the Groper fish. A decision that lies squarely within her purview and authority- and that some might argue was a good one. Irrespective, if you are going to strike the gavel, you ought to at least have a rudimentary understanding on the topic. Understandably, you trust that the tacit knowledge drawn upon by subordinate managers serves you well- but that does not excuse one from doing a few minutes of homework on the subject. “Food systems leadership is something that we can actually build deliberately.” – Joost Guijt, African Food Fellowship Director. A big challenge that faces our food systems currently is inadequate investment by public and private sector actors in making our food systems meet our continent’s needs. The transformation of our food systems relies on critical elements such as evidence-building, availability of seed capital for small-scale farmers, adaptability to changes in our climate and digital eco-systems. This is only possible with deliberate and intentional investment in food systems leadership. Joost Guijt calls on intentional and scaled-up investments by financiers and duty-bearers to support initiatives aimed at building the leadership capacity of food systems leaders in Africa.

Today, Dairy Farmers of Canada President David Wiens shared his journey to leadership with a group of young farmers at the 2025 Future Leaders Forum in Toronto. Sharing insights with Fawn Jackson, DFC Chief Sustainability Officer, David discussed his involvement in dairy associations and how they have shaped his view of leadership. One key takeaway? “You do this for the betterment of the industry. Put your personal, vested interests on the backburner. Always look at what’s good for the collective.”
