Today is Wear it Purple Day (WIPD), and the APA proudly stands with the LGBTQIA+ community to create a supportive, safe and inclusive environment for our rainbow young people. It’s incredibly important for us that we support the next generation, which includes encouraging them to be proud of their identity and creating a space where they feel empowered to express themselves, bringing their whole sense of self to work, school and university. We encourage our members to complete the LGBTQIA+ Affirming Physiotherapy – Part A course which is an evidence-based, interactive course designed to equip physiotherapists with the skills and knowledge to enable appropriate, and culturally safe, provision of physiotherapy to individuals who identify as LGBTQIA+. The course is available on cpd4physios: https://lnkd.in/ghQumNAx To learn more about WIPD, visit https://lnkd.in/fgh9PaX

Well done! AOTA's Susan Cahill PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA , APTA's Toby Long, and their work group created this recruitment and retention guide for the Early Childhood/Education/pediatric rehab fields. As a colleague, I would love to know how I can best support others in their roles. What do YOU need to feel safe, secure, honored, and valued in your work place? There are so many great strategies that are above my pay-grade (Such as "loan forgiveness", yes please!) but others we can implement in our own settings. Suggestions and examples are welcome.
AOTA Director of Evidence Based Practice Susan Cahill PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA participated in the ECTA Center's Technical Workgroup, which led to the development of a curated guide with key strategies that address personnel shortages among those who serve young children with disabilities and their families. Why is belonging an important value for Care to Dance? The Care Review highlighted how care-experienced young people can often feel isolated. Belonging develops a child's ability to build trust and confidence in others. When children feel that they belong, they are better able to cultivate trusting relationships and manage their emotions in healthy and adaptive ways. Inclusivity is another core value and this ensures that every young person feels that they belong within the Care to Dance community no matter their ability and background.

In communities where FGM is practiced, Deaf women may unwittingly conform to it, perceiving it as a cultural norm. Despite government and pro-health organizations' campaigns highlighting its health risks, this vital information often fails to reach the Deaf community. While both hearing and Deaf individuals suffer from the repercussions of FGM, Deaf women face heightened challenges as they may struggle to vocalize their trauma post-procedure. Illustrating this point is the story of a 15-year-old Deaf girl in 2015 who experienced complications, including bleeding and urinary issues, attributed to FGM. According to the Kenya Demographic & Health Survey (KDHS) 2022 data, FGM prevalence stands at 15 percent among girls and women aged 15 to 49 in the country. We urge everyone to report incidents of FGM and implore individuals and organizations serving the Deaf community to empower them, providing a platform for their voices and upholding their human rights.
