Lufthansa makes a significant investment in Ita Airways, allowing the Italian company to become part of a network of excellence and benefit from the expertise of Europe’s leading airline.

New concentration in the European #airlines: #Lufthansa takes over #Alitalia (now renamed ITA AIRWAYS, which is a pretty rotten name). Lufthansa has already acquired the Austrian and Swiss flag carriers (named #Austrian and #Swiss, precisely).

ITA Airways, Italy's flagship carrier, is now officially part of the Lufthansa Group as its fifth network airline. The Lufthansa Group now holds a 41% stake in ITA Airways, with the remaining 59% retained by Italy’s Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF). ITA Needs Lufthansa - While Lufthansa Group Chairman and CEO Carsten Spohr remains optimistic a solution to integrating ITA Airways into the Lufthansa Group will come, he made clear Lufthansa has its limits. “It’s not just about the fact that ITA has a future, it’s also about the fact that Italy, as the third-largest economy in the EU, needs its own connections to the world markets and can’t just be connected from outside. You can’t do this alone if you’re not part of a group,” Spohr said yesterday during the Q1 results call. “It’s also clear that it has to be worth it for us as well. So, there are red lines where it’s no longer worth it [to integrate ITA]. But I think we can find a solution within the red lines without having to cross them.” For Spohr there is no Plan B. “Let’s be honest, Lufthansa can live without ITA. The question is the other way around: can ITA live without Lufthansa? I think more and more observers agree that the answer is ‘no.’” This Italian airline deserve a future, he said, and it has a plan, which is the Lufthansa integration. Also Austrian Airlines is very excited to have a new sister now 🎉 Many articles discuss customer & strategic benefits of this step, I'd like to share my very personal perspective. When I started my career back in 2003, it was a coincidence that I joined Lufthansa. It could have been any other large international company with an appealing product or a consultancy. But very early on - when it was still “only” Lufthansa, without the other airlines we now know as part of the Group - I realized something special: the #openness, #tolerance, and #curiosity for the world and its cultures that unite people in aviation. This is what is basically keeping me in aviation now for nearly 23 years! Later, when SWISS, Austrian, and Brussels Airlines joined, I experienced a new shade of diversity & tolerance: different brands, proud nationalities & histories coming together as a team. And yes, it is not always easy to collaborate when you try to integrate sometimes very different perspectives - but we do need each other to thrive, and we become stronger and personally grow by this process! And today, with now even more brands & diversity in our corporate family, it is for example absolutely fascinating to participate at our market conferences, when colleagues from all brands and divisions come together. I simply love the atmosphere & vibe when diversity & internationality of the Lufthansa Group team truly shine! I’m really proud to lead Austrian Airlines. But leading an airline alone? That would be tough, not to mention far less successful - and frankly, a lot less exciting! 😉 For me personally, aviation has always been about curiosity, diversity, and opportunities. It’s about bringing people together and creating connections! It's my much valued professional "home" in a world that often feels too divided these days.
