The Paris Olympics starts today, and I can't wait! 🥇 This year, up to 15,000 athletes will compete in Paris in search of sporting glory, and the organisers of the 2024 Games have added a fresh ambition to the Olympic motto of "faster, higher, stronger" - they want to be greener too. 2024 will halve the Games' related carbon footprint compared to previous Games, with innovative solutions for energy, food, venues, transport and digital services. Here are 5️⃣ ways Paris 2024 is delivering a more sustainable Games: 1️⃣ Anticipating and avoiding impact Targeting 50% reduction in carbon emissions compared to London & Rio, Paris calculated its "material footprint" - a first in Olympic and Paralympic history. Venue by venue, the organisers created a detailed map of required resources to minimise them and control their lifecycle before, during and after the Games. Paris also minimises diesel generators and uses 100% renewable energy to power the Games. 2️⃣ Reducing, renting and reusing Paris's circular economy strategy means that 95% of the competition venues will be preexisting or temporary. 90% of items are procured by existing organisations and rented, shared, or reused. Out of 2 million pieces of sports equipment, three-quarters will be rented or provided by sports federations. Over three-quarters of the electronic equipment, such as screens, computers, and printers, are also rented. 3️⃣ Regeneration The Games will impact long-term improvements in the living conditions of the local community long after the Olympics and Paralympics are completed. The Olympic Village will be an eco-neighbourhood and be transformed into a new residential and business district, providing workplaces for 6,000 people and apartments for an additional 6,000 residents. 4️⃣ Sustainability During the Games, 13 million meals will be served. 80% of ingredients are from local agriculture production, with a quarter produced within 250km of the venue. Plant-based ingredients will double, providing more options for spectators and the workforce. Single-use plastic used in catering will be cut in half, and catering equipment and infrastructure will be reused 100% after the Games. 5️⃣ Transportation: shorter distances and lower carbon More than 80% of the Olympic venues are situated within 10km of the Olympic Village, minimising travel time for athletes. All venues are accessible by public transport, and the city has built more than 400km of new bike lanes. Here is a photo of me at the canoe sprint at the London 2012 Olympics! I have also been to the Sydney 2000 Olympics and wish I was in Paris, but circumstances didn't allow it. But I hope to be at LA 2028! Let the Games begin!!! Are you going to Paris 2024? The Paris Olympic Games aims to be the first international sporting event to achieve carbon neutrality and reduce its carbon footprint by 55% compared to the 2012 London Games, aligned with the principles of the Paris Climate Agreement. 💡Venue by venue, the organisers created a detailed map of required resources, aiming to minimise them and control their life cycle before, during and after the Games. 💡In addition to using 100% renewable energy during the Games, Paris 2024 is minimising the use of diesel generators. The few generators that will have to be used will be powered by biofuel, H2 or batteries. All venues will be connected to the grid to avoid the use of temporary energy solutions. 💡95% of the Paris 2024 competition venues are pre-existing or temporary. The rest have been built using low-carbon construction methods. 💡The Aquatics Centre is designed to serve the local Seine-Saint-Denis community long after the Games. The Centre will largely rely on energy provided by 4,680 m2 of solar panels installed on its rooftop. All seats in the Centre are made from recycled local plastic waste. Wood is at the heart of the building, helping to reduce emissions from construction. 💡Tents, chairs, computers and sports equipment - Paris 2024 has reduced and encouraged shared use whenever possible. This approach has made it possible, for example, to reduce the amount of furniture needed for the Games from the initially estimated 800,000 items to 600,000. 💡Out of two million pieces of sports equipment, three-quarters will be rented or provided by sports federations. More than three-quarters of the electronic equipment such as screens, computers and printers are also rented. The same is true for all the stands, tents and bungalows. 💡Sourcing 80% of ingredients from local agriculture production, with a quarter produced within 250km of the respective venue. 💡Cutting food waste by better estimating quantities, redistributing, composting or transforming all unconsumed food. 💡Cutting single-use plastic used in catering by half while reusing 100% of catering equipment and infrastructure after the Games. 💡Spectators will be allowed to enter all venues with their own reusable bottles, a notable exception to existing French regulations. 💡The Paris 2024 organisers have structured the Games to leverage an extensive existing public transport network, reinforced by more than 400km of new bike lanes. 💡More than 80% of the Olympic venues are situated within 10km of the Olympic Village, minimising travel time for athletes. 💡All venues are accessible by public transport. 💡The vehicle fleet catering to athletes and the accredited participants includes electric, hybrid and hydrogen-powered vehicles, with about 40 per cent fewer vehicles compared to previous Games. 5 Reasons Paris 2024 is the "Most Sustainable" Olympic Games Ever. We’ve heard quite often about #sustainableevents. But how can the world’s largest sporting event champion this? They've embraced a proactive method grounded in 5 key steps. Step 1: Anticipate. The Paris 2024 Organising Committee, aligning with the Paris Agreement, set a “target carbon footprint”* of 1.5 million tonnes of CO2e, and implemented ambitious actions to remain within it, focusing on all major sources (construction, transport, operations). Step 2: Avoid. The Committee focused on minimising emissions by exclusively using existing or temporary structures and venues, avoiding the need for new construction and reducing the associated impact. Step 3: Mitigate. They accurately identified the sources of emissions and implemented low-carbon solutions, including: - Reuse and recycle of materials - Use of power generated by renewable energy sources - Use of clean vehicles - Purchasing criteria for sustainable food Step 4: Offset. Paris 2024 has committed €15 million to environmentally and socially beneficial projects to offset the unavoidable carbon footprint generated, such as spectator travel, and thus meet the carbon target of 1.5 million tonnes of CO2e. Unlike to the previous Games at Tokyo 2020, the Committee employed a cap-and-trade system**, acquiring 4.38 million tonnes of CO2e credits to compensate for its projected 1.96 million tonnes of CO2e emissions. It was a great approach, however it was partially aided by significantly reduced spectator numbers due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This time, Paris 2024 has full attendance, and its carbon offsetting efforts will be crucial. Step 5: Catalyse Action. Partnering with WWF-France, the Committee is accelerating the transformation of sporting events by focusing on sustainable sporting structures, eliminating single-use plastics, raising awareness of balanced diets, and harnessing sport to protect biodiversity. By following these steps, Paris 2024 - Comité d'organisation des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de 2024 is setting a new standard for sustainability in large-scale events. How will the Los Angeles’ 2028 Games build on Paris' legacy and accelerate progress towards the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals? Keep in mind that whether you're organising a small gathering or a large-scale event, measuring your carbon footprint is the first step. This data forms the foundation for setting achievable emissions reduction goals and developing a tailored sustainability strategy. When event planners push sustainability to new heights...change happens. Eco-friendly practices are becoming the norm, and this is one trend everyone can (and should) get behind. Here are 3 innovative sustainable moves from event professionals that we can all learn from: 1. Repurpose event materials At the 2024 Paris Olympics, organizers upcycled materials like iron and shuttlecocks, turning them into medals and furniture. They’re also donating 16,000 mattresses and pillows to beneficiaries and putting used equipment up for resale or recovery. via Claire Poole, Forbes 🌳 Impact: The Olympics aimed to reduce carbon footprint by 50% compared to their predecessors. 2. Zero-waste catering Purslane commits to becoming a carbon-neutral event caterer by collecting all food waste at events and bringing them back to their headquarters to compost and recycle. 🌳 Impact: Purslane saved 85,000 pounds of trash the landfill, preventing the 125 metric tons of carbon emissions. via Bridget Shirvell, Forbes 3. Virtual goody bags Companies are ditching the old stationery-shirt–mug combo and pivoting to virtual swag bags, offering more sustainable goodies like digital downloads, e-coupons, and virtual gift cards. 🌳 Impact: The average event attendee produces 4 pounds waste each day. For a three-day event with 1000 people, over 11,000 pounds of waste is accumulated, most of which goes straight to the landfill. via MeetGreen® What was your favorite sustainable practice in events history? #ceotakes #sustainableevents #eventplanning #ecofriendly #zerowasteevents #carbonneutral
