I was absolutely humbled to be a part of today's 9/11 Memorial panel at Hudson County Community College. From hearing stories and reflections from my distinguished colleagues, to taking in the sights and sounds of Journal Square, it was a fitting start to a somber day. In my own reflections, I noted that I had been only eleven years old during the day of the attacks. It was a transitional period for me: I had started junior high, and I was at a brand new school. Though September 11, 2001 brought us together as a country in many ways, it also brought some of the "ugly" out, which historically seems to rear its head during times of crisis. Islamophobia and Arab American hate crimes rose by over 1600% (FBI) in the aftermath of 9/11. With the last name Youssef, I didn't have an easy time navigating the already challenging dynamics of junior high. I became a "terrorist." A "suicide bomber." And worse...racial epithets I wouldn't dare post online became my every day normal. It was traumatic. I developed a lifelong speech impediment, and my grades plummeted in school. I turned to reading. I turned to writing. Eventually, I would find teaching, my voice, and thus my purpose. The concept of scapegoating, otherizing, and prejudice, especially during periods of friction or hardship, is not a new phenomenon. It's only through education, conversation, and shared story experiences that we can hope to break the cycle and celebrate what makes this country so unique: its beautiful diversity. #september11th #highereducation #diversityandinclusion #collegesanduniversities #hudsoncounty #education #HudsonisHome #wewillneverforget

Groups of such liberty-loving people cannot live together in peace without becoming subservient to such laws, rules, and regulations as will grant each person the same degree of freedom while at the same time safeguarding an equal degree of freedom for all of his/her fellows. If one human is to be absolutely free, then another must become an absolute slave. And the relative nature of freedom is true socially, economically, and politically. Freedom is the gift of civilization made possible by the enforcement of LAW.
