Coldplay didn't just plant a tree🌱
They pushed the limit 🎸
I love concerts.
The wastefulness always hurts me.
And: Coldplay's Music of the Spheres tour 'did' push the limit to see - "what a greener and more circular tour can be?"
The band surpassed their initial 50% emissions reduction goal, achieving a 60% decrease compared to their 2016 tour.
Here's how they made it happen:
✈️ Minimising air travel.
🚗 Using sustainable aviation fuel.
🌱 Planting a tree for every ticket sold.
📱 Rewarding fans for the use of low-carbon transport.
♻️ Building stages from low-carbon, reusable materials like bamboo.
🔋 Powering shows with renewable energy, including kinetic dancefloors.
Can you enjoy a "green" concert more?

Coldplay isn’t just fixing hearts; they’re fixing the planet, one sustainable beat at a time!
Here’s how Coldplay’s "Music of the Spheres" tour is making sustainability a headliner:
- REDUCE, REINVENT, RESTORE: Coldplay aims to cut CO2 emissions by 50%, touring in a way that’s as eco-friendly as their music is inspiring.
- Electric Energy through Dance Moves: The stage runs on renewable energy, and fans power the show by dancing on kinetic floors. Boogie for a cause!
- Sustainable Flights: Coldplay uses sustainable aviation fuel made from waste, taking eco-friendly travel to new heights.
- LED Wristbands: The iconic wristbands are now 100% compostable and reused after each show, lighting up responsibly.
- Reforestation & Ocean Cleanup Efforts: They plant a tree for every ticket sold and 10% of their profits goes towards ocean cleanup efforts.
- Eco-Friendly Confetti & Pyrotechnics: Biodegradable confetti and less harmful pyrotechnics – they’re even making fireworks green!
And just when I thought I'd live with the regret of not hearing "Yellow" in their concert live, it turns out the real heartbreak is missing out on experiencing how they’re turning their concerts "Green"! 🌍
Humans impact the physical environment in many ways, from overpopulation, to pollution, burning fossil fuels, and deforestation, etc. Changes like these have triggered climate change, soil erosion, poor air quality, and undrinkable water, for example. However most of our daily activities include activities that also generate impacts the environment and generate carbon emissions, such as mega events. Concerts from artist touring around the world are another example. Coldplay is giving a great example on how to do this sustainability. What a great way to walk the talk and educate their fans, thus having a positive tangible impact and making the difference with their innovative approach to sustainability in music concert tours.
They are making Music Of The Spheres Tour as sustainable and low-carbon as possible, guided by three key principles:
* Reduce: They have pledged to cut the tour’s direct emissions by more than 50% compared to our previous tour (2016-17), and work with their partners and suppliers to reduce their impacts and emissions as much as possible, reduce their consumption and recycle extensively.
* Reivent: Support new green technologies and develop new sustainable, super-low carbon touring methods.
* Restore: Make the tour as environmentally beneficial as possible by funding a portfolio of nature- and technology-based projects and by drawing down significantly more CO2 than the tour produces.
Where they cannot reduce, they will be drawing down any unavoidable emissions following the guidance within the Oxford Principles for Net-Zero Aligned carbon offsetting. Despite their best efforts, the tour will still have a significant carbon footprint. They therefore pledge to drawdown more CO2 than the tour produces supporting projects based on reforestation, rewilding, conservation, soil regeneration, carbon capture & storage and renewable energy. As part of this pledge, the tour is funding the planting – and lifelong protection of – millions of new trees including one tree for every ticket sold.

Did you know Coldplay's latest concerts had a seriously green twist? They took sustainability to a whole new level on their Music Of The Spheres Tour. Here's how:
Their 2024 sustainability report is remarkable. The tour's CO2 emissions were a staggering 59% less than their previous one in 2016-17, validated by none other than Prof. John E. Fernández from MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative.
But you're probably wondering, how did they bring about this drastic change?
Their action-list is the perfect blueprint for a low carbon footprint tour:
- The greening of 7 million trees
- 2 solar-powered devices cleaning up our oceans
- LED wristbands enjoyed a second life with an 86% return and re-use rate
- 18 entirely battery-powered concerts in 2023
- 23 partnerships with green travel providers
- An average of 17kWh power per show generated using solar installations, kinetic dance floors, and and power bikes
- 100% of the concerts offered free water refills for fans
- Carbon emissions reduced by over 3,000 tonnes by opting for Sustainable Aviation Fuel
- An amazing 72% of tour waste was saved from landfills and used for recycling and composting
- Over 9,625 meals and 90kg of toiletries were donated to the unhoused and unsheltered
- Financial support given to environmental organisations
This isn't simply buying carbon offset credits. This is making real changes. Coldplay's approach was deliberate and diverse, setting an enviable example for the rest of the music industry.

Coldplay has achieved an impressive 59% reduction in direct CO2e emissions on their Music Of The Spheres World Tour compared to their previous stadium tour in 2016-17[3]. This surpasses their initial 50% reduction goal and sets a new standard for sustainable touring in the music industry.
How? They have a de-carbonization strategy including:
• Powering shows with renewable energy, including fan-driven kinetic dance floors and power bikes
• Encouraging sustainable fan travel, resulting in 48% lower average carbon footprint per traveler
• Planting 7 million trees - one for every ticket sold
• Diverting 72% of tour waste from landfills
While significant progress has been made, Coldplay acknowledges there's still work to be done. "As an industry, we're far from where we need to be".
These efforts are endorsed by Prof. John E. Fernández of MIT, stating they are "setting a new standard for the entire music industry".
As cool as this is, and it is, it's time for everyone to prioritize carbon accounting as the foundation for decarbonization efforts. Measure your full carbon footprint, set reduction targets, and engage your entire value chain. By taking these steps, companies can reduce their environmental impact while driving innovation, mitigating risks, and positioning themselves for success in a low-carbon future.
The clock is ticking – let's turn carbon accounting into tangible climate progress.

I Don’t Like Coldplay, But…
I read this blog on Coldplay
- Green Electricity for Concerts:
Coldplay uses a kinetic dance floor to generate electricity during their concerts.
A day before the concert, solar panels are installed to help power the event sustainably.
- Waste Management at Concerts:
Single-use plastic is banned at Coldplay's concerts.
At every show, there are free water refill stations (unlike Justin Bieber's concert in Bandra, where a water bottle cost 200 bucks).
- Nature Care:
For every ticket sold, Coldplay promises to plant one tree. They claim to have planted 8 million trees worldwide.
Each attendee is given a wristband made from sustainable materials.
Additionally, Coldplay travels on planes that use sustainable fuel, and they donate 10% of their profits to environmental agencies.
Finally, Coldplay publishes a sustainability report on their website: Coldplay Sustainability https://lnkd.in/d82Za3_S
But, after reading all those things my mindset has changed…

Happy Friday everyone,
Here is some light and positive content to finish the week on a good note!
Coldplay is reporting a 59% reduction in CO2 emissions on their tour following a pledge they made in 2021. It's a great example of breaking down emission sources and finding solutions and or alternatives.
While concerts may not be primary contributors to climate change, the fact remains that ALL industries need to reach net zero. With that in mind it's wonderful to see this kind of initiative.
You can find more information in the link below but I'll list a few key points that made this possible
"-Solar-powered The Ocean Cleanup River Interceptors deployed
86% = average return and re-use rate of LED wristbands
-18 shows powered entirely using the tourable battery system in 2023 (made from recycled BMW i3 batteries)
-23 partnerships with green travel providersto help fans travel to shows via super-low carbon transport"
Cheers,
