If I’ve never been a lawyer or worked in a law firm so how can I possibly show law firm partners how to free up their time, unleash their teams’ potential and greatly elevate their profitability? It’s because I’ve never been a lawyer or worked in a law firm and have a background that’s heavy in advanced leadership study and practice that gives me that edge. The truth is that law firm partners become promoted to partner based on their book of clients and the number of hours they bill, not because of their leadership and management training. This causes them to remain stuck and feel overwhelmed as they try to hit billing targets while also managing a team. At no point in the many years of academic study to become a qualified lawyer, while being a junior, associate or even while being an equity partner at a law firm are lawyers taught management and leadership skills. For this reason, the last person you’d want to be mentored by is someone who is still trying to do everything themselves. Are you an accidental CEO? If you are a founding or managing partner of a #lawfirm, the answer is likely a YES. ➡ Maybe you founded your own firm to better serve clients, escape a toxic environment, or make more money. ➡ Perhaps you were elected by your partners to take the helm of the firm based on your high originations and stellar reputation as a #lawyer. ➡ Or it could be that you nominated yourself for the top position because you thought you were up for the job. Whatever the case may be, as the leader of a #lawfirm, you must adopt a way of thinking that is counterintuitive to your lawyer brain. Thinking big, managing people, taking risks, and being able to nimbly swing between proactive and reactive thinking are CEO qualities, not those of most attorneys. If we're being super honest, the role of founding or managing partner is not all that it's cracked up to be - but it doesn't have to feel this way. With the right insight, guidance, intentionality, accountability, strategy, discipline, resilience, and sense of humor, it is totally possible to be a super effective firm leader AND enjoy a fulfilling professional and personal life. Law school doesn't teach this, and even years of equity partnership doesn't prepare you for a role at the top. It's ok to seek help. Actually, it's more than ok. How is a Partner to Know if They are on the Right Track? Being a partner in a major law firm, really in any law firm, is super challenging. It takes a lot of intestinal fortitude, intellectual firepower, hard work, and often, creativity—and a whole lot more. I work with lateral partners. My candidates have a vast array of hurdles before they make it to a new law firm, happy, energized, and ready to start a new chapter. One thing most every partner needs, except in rare circumstances, is to generate client matters—it could be from an existing client or from a new client. A portable client base (and it’s a sliding scale depending on an array of factors) is critical. One salient observation I’ve made from placing many law firm partners over the years is that getting to client generation numbers of $500k is a great marker of success. And getting from $500k to $1m is an even greater marker. In my experience, when that is accomplished in ½ the time it took to get to $500k, you are REALLY on the right track! Evaluate how you stack up and put yourself on target to hit that $500k mark as soon as you can. Hitting your targets can be immensely rewarding and will more likely result in your success as a partner. One final note—when I talk with partners for the first time, often the first thing they want to tell me is, “I did $1m last year and am on track to better that this year.” It’s a source of pride that comes through loud and clear as you build your practice. #lawpractice #legalpractice #partner #lawfirm #legalfirm #lawcareer #legalcareer

Are you the bottleneck to your law firm's growth? Most law firm owners are, including me without the right systems in place. It is never a nice feeling admitting that your actions are why your firm is at a standstill but sometimes you need to have a tough conversation with yourself and take action.
