Autism (ASD) often affects the way a person perceives stimuli and socializes. Multisensory spaces help facilitate sensory regulation by creating a controlled environment in which different sensory stimuli can be adjusted to the user's needs and preferences. During autism awareness month, let's hear Javier's story and see how a sensory space in an ordinary school helps him process stimulus overload, bringing him to a calm and relaxed state. This is never an easy thing to post about but it needs to be discussed. Suicide in the autism population is on the rise and it should be a discussion everyone is having. There are many, many strategies that can be used to develop prosocial behaviors that will reduce the likelihood of suicidal ideation. This is a great article from Kennedy Krieger on the correlation between suicide and autism disorder.

Using proper terminology to describe your son's or daughter's degree of autism might help their job prospects as well as convey the level of support they might need on the the job. In an article published today by the Cleveland Clinic, the suggestion is to use level designators instead of labelling your child High-Functioning or Low-Functioning. "The DSM-5 specifies three different levels of autism severity: - Level one means you require support. - Level two means you require substantial support. - Level three means you require very substantial support." During my Neurodiversity training sessions I'm often asked about how to best support someone who doesn't yet have an autism diagnosis. BBC news reported at the end of last year that the average wait for an intial autism diagnosis appointment in England has hit 300 days. That’s up 53% from 12 months prior and exceeds the NICE target of 91 days. Delays in diagnosis lead to uncertainty, and can block access to support. Back in 2019 the British Medical Association reported that “a delayed diagnosis can impact on access to education. On a personal level, a delayed diagnosis denies a child or young person the opportunity to understand the factors that are causing them to respond in a specific way. For families this can create undue stress, with their child’s response to the world often misinterpreted as poor behavioural issues… Secondly, a delayed diagnosis may lead to mental health conditions going undiagnosed.” Now in 2024 the situation is worsening. According to NHS England, in the month of June 2024 there were 9146 new referrals for Autism, and over 187,000 people were waiting for a first appointment for their autism referral. The first appointment is just the first step in a series of appointments and assessments, and it can be months between each one. Only 5% of patients were seen within the target of 13 weeks. In some parts of the UK the waiting time is over three years. Schools and workplaces are starting to use the concept of a working diagnosis. This means recognising that a child or adult is struggling to meet some expectations and standard ways of learning and working. Appropriate support and adjustments are put in place early, rather than allowing a person to struggle or fail before action is taken. #neurodiversityintheplace #neurodiversity #autism #actuallyautistic #autism #neurodivergent
