A new draft national autism strategy has just been released, aiming to help shift the dial so the community can live, work and play like everyone else. "It's time to acknowledge that being autistic doesn't mean we're flawed or broken and need to be fixed. It's also time to work towards preventing anything that seeks to erase autistic identities." (Clare Gibellini, a co-chair of the strategy oversight group). This is a positive move forward, an opportunity to have a say. https://lnkd.in/g-9xrZCm There is also a link in the article. Supporting communication growth, self-advocacy and learning for autistic children and young adults in Scarborough and Durham Region (Ontario)
Some autistic people, particularly in the UK, identify as PDAers (who experience extreme demand avoidance). At the same time, others say that most autistic folks experience a high degree of demand anxiety, and many people dislike the term that PDA stands for. While there is no consensus on whether PDA is a distinct expression of autism, it is becoming increasingly clear that a low demand approach allows many autistic people to thrive. Acknowledging that there is not one universally accepted definition of autism that captures everyone's experience, the Australian Government recently released the draft National Autism Strategy for community feedback. It aims to address the whole-of-life needs of Autistic people, provide better support, and align with other national strategies. It includes a vision, guiding principles, outcome areas, and commitments, providing a framework for improving the life outcomes of autistic people. Many contributors and voices have provided their input to the strategy so far and the community has from April to May to provide feedback.
