We applaud today's passage of the Autism CARES Act of 2024 by the House of Representatives. This new bill improves the foundational federal law governing our national response to autism and re-authorizes federal funds to be spent on autism research. The bill includes language throughout the text mandating greater inclusivity of research, including those with the greatest needs who have profound autism. https://lnkd.in/eU6_x682

Our Chief Science Officer testified before Congress this week, emphasizing the importance of The Autism CARES Act of 2024. This pivotal legislation proposes allocating $2 billion over the next five years to further propel autism research, enhance services, and provide training for healthcare professionals. This is the only piece of federal legislation solely dedicated to improving the lives of autistic people. Advancing The Autism CARES Act of 2024 ranks among our foremost legislative objectives this year: https://lnkd.in/giS6Vik5

As we are in World Autism Awareness Week, I thought I would take a moment to talk about my son. Toby is the middle of my 3 children and received a diagnosis in 2018. If I am honest we struggled to start with, as some older family members didn't want Toby to be 'labelled'. My wife, who is a Primary Teacher and Senco, soon explained to them the benefits to Toby of the diagnosis. 6 years in, here is what I have learnt, 1). Routine, routine, routine. 2). Calm environments and plenty of fidget toys etc 3). Pre-planning for activities, I often show Tobe pictures of holidays, videos of hotels etc in advance. 4). Downtime, being a 16 year old in his GCSE year, downtime is essential 5). Affection, happiness and positive outlook - this is infectious from him 6). Pride - we are immensely proud of Tobe, who continues to thrive and is a kind, loving person (with the odd moment!!!) This year, his love and fixation on Cricket has been rewarded and he has been selected to play for Somerset Disability Cricket Team, I knew those years in the garden letting him bowl me out would be useful 😄 Post pandemic the world of business has at times seemed less connected, with remote working and endless Teams / Zoom calls. Some days you can feel that you haven't actually spoken to a real person. I am so lucky that on the tough days, I always get a knock on my office door when he gets home from School, a massive hug and whatever has happened he looks at the positive - now I think that is a great way to be. #tailendersoftheworlduniteandtakeover - if you know, you know.
