So great to see Getafe CF from Spain's La Liga making a powerful gesture supporting autism awareness and neurodiversity acceptance by wearing noise canceling headphones during their match! By wearing headphones, Getafe players highlighted the sensory overload many autistic individuals experience and shed light on the challenges faced by the autistic community. Kudos to Getafe CF for using their platform to raise awareness for such an important cause. Let's continue breaking down barriers and celebrating neurodiversity in sports and beyond. Such initiatives should become more common in sports, fostering inclusivity and understanding across all communities. https://lnkd.in/gEag7hs3

World Autism Awareness Day is a moment to recognize and celebrate the important contributions of autistic people in every country and community. But around the world, they continue to confront barriers to their fundamental rights to education, employment and social inclusion — as called for by the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. As a matter of fundamental rights, governments must invest in stronger community support systems, inclusive education and training programmes, and accessible and technology-based solutions to enable persons with autism to enjoy the same rights as others. Scaling-up support and investment in countries and communities requires working hand-in-hand with persons with autism and their allies. Today and every day, let’s unite to realize their rights, and ensure an inclusive and accessible world for all.

At what age are children typically diagnosed with autism in Ecuador? How do families perceive their child's condition? What are the first signs that parents notice, and where do they mostly turn for support? Which professionals are responsible for diagnosing autism? What kind of support do families commonly receive after a diagnosis, and what are their main priorities? The answers to these questions, among others, are part of our latest publication in the journal Autism, the result of a fruitful collaboration between researchers from Ecuador, the UK (UCL / University of Birmingham), and Switzerland (Université de Genève, FAPSE) Laura Crane, Edouard Gentaz, Thalia Cavadini, Cristina Armijos, Patricia Soto, Maria de Lourdes Ortega M This work underscores the importance of cross-border academic partnerships and their direct influence on shaping public policy. The findings play a crucial role in contributing to the development of a National Strategy for Autism in Ecuador. We are deeply grateful to the participating families, as well as to the Ecuadorian Parent Association (APADA) and the Ecuadorian National Council for Disabilities (CONADIS), for their invaluable support. https://lnkd.in/epk9qqxj

When we think of #autism, it’s crucial to remember that it doesn't follow a straight line. #Autism is a spectrum, which means each individual's experience and challenges can vary greatly. It's not a matter of being "more" or "less" autistic—it's about different ways of thinking, feeling, and interacting with the world. Some may have incredible strengths in certain areas while facing difficulties in others. For instance, someone might excel in mathematics but struggle with social interactions, or they may be nonverbal yet have an extraordinary ability to connect with others emotionally. Let’s move away from the idea that autism can be mapped out on a single path or scale. Instead, we should embrace the diversity within the spectrum and recognize that each individual’s journey is unique. In celebrating this diversity, we not only become better supporters and allies but also help create an environment where every person on the autism spectrum can thrive in their own way. #AutismAwareness #Neurodiversity #Support #Inclusion
