In a recent issue of our RAISE: The Standard newsletter, we explore the unique needs of youth in the foster system, and how to improve outcomes through the transition planning process. Did you know that 40–50 percent of adolescents in the U.S. foster care system have disabilities? The numbers are growing. New research shows the population of youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities in foster care has grown substantially since 2016, and the rates of autism and intellectual disability among youth in foster care are now two to five times greater than the rates found in the general U.S. population. Among youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Black youth and female youth had a higher risk for foster care involvement compared to youth who were white or male. What does this mean for transition planning? 📅 Today is R U OK? Day – a great reminder to check in with your people. We all face pressures and challenges in life. Taking a moment to ask "Are you OK?" could open the door to a meaningful conversation and offer someone the support they need. Self-care and having a good support network are SO important. But don’t forget, it’s okay to lean on others when you need it too Parents of children with disabilities, teachers, and those working in research and education often carry a lot of weight on their shoulders. It’s easy to focus on supporting others, but it's just as important to check in with yourself. Check out this video from R U OK? - a fantastic resource with an #Auslan interpreter for spreading this message in an #inclusive way. #RUOK #RUOKDay #CheckInWithYourPeople #MentalHealth #SupportNetwork #Inclusion

Tuesday’s #WorldAutismAwarenessDay is an opportunity to celebrate autistic people's invaluable contributions to communities everywhere. But around the world, they continue to confront barriers to their fundamental rights to education, employment and social inclusion. “Today and every day, let’s unite to realize their rights, and ensure an inclusive and accessible world for all," said UN Secretary-General António Guterres. https://lnkd.in/e9jCgYv

Let's celebrate Disability Pride Month! I'm proud of my disability identity and the journey learning to live with (and embrace) my deafness has taken me on. It's a continuous learning process: some days I am confident about who I am, other days I wobble. Disability Pride Month, celebrated every July to mark the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990, provides an opportunity for disabled people to take up space and share experiences - a way for nondisabled and disabled alike to learn and grow. I'm a passionate advocate for equity and inclusion in society. As a nondisabled people I didn't take enough time to learn more about disability, amplify disabled voices, or take concrete action to support my community. That is one of many learnings that I have had over the last two years. Created in 2019 by Ann Magill, and updated in 2021 to be more inclusive, the Disability Pride Flag signifies a different group of disabilities for each colour: Red - physical Gold - neurodiversity White/Pale Grey - invisible or undiagnosed Blue - mental health Green - sensory (including blindness & deafness) Not sure how you can celebrate? Here are some easy ways to get involved: 1. Follow disabled creators, voices, and advocates - show your support and tag them or share this post. 2. Talk to your children about what Disability Pride means: https://lnkd.in/eeq6nsSm 3. Watch film/TV made by disabled people and with disabled people as actors (https://lnkd.in/e77vrrRk) 4. Make your content more accessible - find out how here: https://lnkd.in/eWZtiE-p #DisabilityPride #DisabilityPrideMonth #Disability #AreYouListening

This week is #LearningDisabilityWeek2024, a week to raise awareness about different learning disabilities, what life is like for those who have one and to also celebrate what people with learning disabilities bring to society. This year's theme is "Do you see me?" which is all about people with learning disabilities being seen, heard and valued. Here at Rafiki Thabo, we are proud to be partnering with two organisations in Kenya whose aim is to support and elevate people with learning disabilities, and ensure they are seen, heard and valued. Autism Society of Kenya does an incredible job lobbying government to ensure autistic children in Kenya get the rights they are entitled to and the support they need to thrive, in their homes, communities and schools. Dadashi Special Children’s Centre provides holistic services to children with cerebral palsy, and other developmental disabilities, and their families. The families that use the services of both these organisations are left in no doubt that their children are valued, and both ensure those children are seen and heard. We are delighted to have been able to accept some of the children using their services onto our scholarship programme: with an education they will also be empowered to make sure they are seen, heard and valued! #AccesibilidadDigital
