The Paralympics were a fantastic celebration and demonstration of sport, and the power of representation, as this quote from Hannah Cockroft OBE, PLY, DL (made following her win in the women’s 100m T34) encapsulates... "In the call room this morning, someone told me, ‘I watched you in 2012 and that’s why I am here.’ I really hope there are some girls at home who are doing the same because that’s what it’s all about. Hopefully, today, some new dreams have been born." We highly recommend reading some more of the inspirational quotes from Paralympians at the 2024 Games here: https://lnkd.in/gVjK2-hv At Origins - The Patient Focused Specialists, we believe representation is crucial - not only in sports but also in healthcare. 🏅 Unveiling the Untold Stories: Paralympic Challenges Beyond the Limelight 🏅 While the Paralympic Games celebrate incredible achievements, it's essential to acknowledge that becoming a Paralympian involves more than just having a disability. Paralympians are elite athletes who excel through talent, rigorous training, and dedication. Funding, which I'll discuss in another post, also plays a crucial role in their journey. 🏋️♀️ Becoming a Paralympian: More Than a Disability One common misconception is that being disabled automatically qualifies someone for elite Paralympic competition. However, Paralympians are exceptional athletes with a combination of extraordinary talent, rigorous training, and dedication. 1️⃣ Immense Talent Paralympic athletes exhibit remarkable skill, precision, and athleticism. Their success in various sports requires a high degree of natural talent. 2️⃣ Rigorous Training Paralympians undergo extensive training regimens to perfect techniques and build strength. Their journey involves intense preparation and relentless practice. 3️⃣ Dedication and Perseverance Achieving Paralympic status demands unwavering commitment, overcoming societal, logistical, and personal hurdles. It requires extraordinary perseverance and focus. 🌟 Paralympians: Elite Athletes in Their Own Right Paralympians should be recognised for their world-class athletic abilities, not just for "overcoming" their disabilities. Their performances showcase technical prowess and competitive excellence, deserving respect as elite athletes. 📣 Challenging Ableism in Sport Reducing Paralympians to figures of inspiration based solely on their disabilities reinforces ableism. Recognising them as elite competitors can combat limiting narratives and promote a more inclusive understanding of athletic excellence. 🌍 The Bigger Picture: Advocating for All Disabled Athletes While Paralympians are exceptional, not every disabled person will become one, nor should they be expected to. Disabled individuals have diverse dreams and ambitions. Highlighting Paralympians is important, but we must also value the broader contributions of disabled people in various fields. #ThoughtProvokingThursdays #JusticeReform #SupportNotPunishment #InclusiveSociety

The Paralympic Games is a major international multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities. Held every four years, shortly after the Olympic Games, the Paralympics showcases the extraordinary talents of over 4,000 athletes from across the globe. The beginning of the Paralympic Games can be traced back to Dr. Ludwig Guttmann, a pioneering neurologist born in 1899 in Germany. Fleeing the Nazi regime in 1939, Guttmann settled in England, where he would make significant contributions to sports for people with disabilities. As the founder of the Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, he used sports as a form of rehabilitation for World War II veterans with spinal cord injuries to gain physical strength and psychological resilience. In 1948, he organised the Stoke Mandeville Games —a sports competition for wheelchair athletes that coincided with the London Olympics. This event laid the foundation for the Paralympic Games that officially commenced in Rome in 1960 with 400 athletes from 23 countries. The Paralympics have since evolved to include athletes from over 160 countries participating in 22 sports and 549 events and was watched by over 4.1 billion people during the Tokyo 2020 Games. The Paralympics, a celebration of incredible athletic skills, is a testament to the transformative impact of Dr. Guttmann's treatments. It promotes inclusion, equality, and disability awareness, inspiring athletes and spectators worldwide. #Paris2024 #Olympics #ParisOlympics #Sports #ParisOlympics2024 #DisabilitySport #Paralympics #Paralympian #ParaAthlete #Paralympics2024 #DisabilityInclusion #DisabilityPride #DisabilityAwareness #DisabilitySupport

My Olympic ponderance As the Olympics get into full swing and I personally look forward to the Paralympics, it's crucial to reflect on the true meaning of "parallel." (Parallel to the Olympics). Currently, the Paralympics follow the Olympics, rather than running alongside them. This separation suggests a disparity in how we view athletes with disabilities compared to their non-disabled counterparts. Imagine a world where the Paralympics and Olympics happen concurrently, showcasing all athletes' achievements and abilities on the same stage. This would not only highlight the incredible talents of Paralympians but also promote a culture of inclusivity and equality in sports. #Inclusivity #Paralympics #Olympics #EqualityInSports

Forbes shares three things we can learn from the summer paralympic games this summer in Paris. 1. Don't overdose on inspiration - while we can be inspired by their disabled athletes, let's focus on their commitment, their training and their achievements and less about their disability. 2. Paralympic sports provide lessons -- in achievement, adaptations and desire to be great in a sport that speaks to you. We can all relate to this. 3. Paralympic games are fun to watch - we all like to watch people achieve great things. This is true in both the Olympic games and Paralympic games. #DisabledAndCapable #DisabilityInclusion #DisabilityCompetitive Andrew Pulrang | International Paralympic Committee https://bit.ly/3TWhYFY

Motivational Speaker Maha Vishnu Spews Ignorant Nonsense While Paralympians Show What True Strength Is! 🔥 Recently, Maha Vishnu, a so-called "motivational speaker," had the nerve to claim that disabilities are caused by "past life sins." What kind of ignorance is this in 2024? Such backward, regressive thinking deserves no place in modern society! It’s time to call out these ridiculous beliefs and focus on celebrating resilience and true human strength. Meanwhile, our incredible Paralympians have brought home 7 Gold, 9 Silver, and 13 Bronze medals, proving that disabilities are no barrier to greatness. These athletes have shattered all limits with their strength, skill, and perseverance. 🏅💪 Let’s honor our real heroes who defy the odds and reject the nonsense peddled by small-minded people. Disabilities don’t limit greatness—small minds do. #CelebrateStrength #motivation #NoToDiscrimination #personaldevelopment #InclusionMatters #chennai #Paralympians #opportunity #shining #heros

Have you taken a few minutes, a few hours to watch any of the Paralympic disciplines at the Paris Olympics 2024? If not, you still have a few days left...👌 A Strong commitment to Inclusion and Diversity that we all promote in our Companies. This competition is marked by a profound reflection on Inclusion. The participants are all disabled, and each one is as different as the next, demonstrating their commitment and motivation to integration. They often surpass themselves more than an able-bodied athlete. They fail with Smiles and Joy. They cheer each other on every step of the way. They suffer during the trials to give the best of what they have to offer. I think we could say that we are luckier in certain situations. But the question I asked myself first before sharing it with you is: "Why can't we manage to reflect so much positivism, joy and willpower, and how can we acquire the Iron Mentality that is theirs? They are just Exemplary! RESPECT Dear Paralympic Athletes!!✊️✊️✊️ #JOParis2024 #HiltonBrussels #Pandox #Passion #Teamwork #Teamspirit #Volounteer #Sport #inspiring #example #Hilton #Hospitality #Strengths #Respect #Philosophy
