💙 Kit’s Story 💙 Kit started our service with a clear goal: to work in a administrative role. They were getting interviews but not passing them, and they were feeling discouraged. They felt they were not able to demonstrate their suitability for the role, and they had limited experience in administration. Kit was looking for an administrative apprenticeship, but they only had experience working with their mother, which they felt they could not use in applications because it was not paid or volunteer work. We helped Kit identify barriers to employment, including application forms and reasonable adjustments. We also discussed ADHD traits and how they might present in the workplace. Kit was feeling particularly down about their work prospects so we decided to focus in job searching while continuing to work on barriers. With help and support from our amazing team Kit got an interview for an Apprentice Admin Position at Flexowash. After a successful interview Kit secured the apprenticeship and has now started in the role! 🙌 To read more about Kit’s story, please use the following link: https://lnkd.in/eUX_-B7t

Psychology and Human Resource Management student at Rutgers University - New Brunswick Honors College
Saying that my experience working as an intern at the Organization for Autistic Individuals (OAI) over the summer was 'enlightening' would be a severe understatement. For 2 weeks, I observed the running of the school, witnessed the various symptoms of Autism in individuals who fell all across the spectrum, observed sections such as occupational therapy, academics, sports, computer learning, while engaging in classes such as art and craft, vocational therapy, and kitchen skills to aid the students learn these activities. Here are my biggest takeaways: 1. While people on the spectrum avoid eye-contact, since maintaining the same is overstimulating, it does not mean that their are not paying attention or are unaware of their surroundings. 2. When given the resources and customized mode of education, these individuals can virtually learn anything. For example, some students are qualified enough to independently use Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, as well as Excel. 3. Their dearth of communication skills and general body language may make it seem as if they lack emotions but in reality, they have only have difficulty expressing it. For example, the day before one of the students’ birthday, almost every single child kept mentioning that it was the next day. Another instance is when some of the observant and verbal students are able to point out which of their friends had been absent from school that day. Overall, I got to see the manifestation of the different symptoms I had learnt in my classes in these students, other nuances, and even cultural differences beyond the textbook. I would like to thank the faculty, staff, and the administration for this incredible opportunity and look forward to more such hands-on experiences.

As we continue to navigate the complexities of today’s world, the mental health of our youth is more crucial than ever. At the ALIVE Center, we are deeply committed to creating a safe and supportive environment for teens to thrive emotionally and mentally. Our approach is holistic, focusing on the four pillars of Resiliency, Leadership, Belonging, and Discovery. These pillars guide our programs and activities, empowering teens to build strong coping skills, lead with confidence, find their community, and explore their passions. Interns like Amal M. from Aurora University have shared the impact the ALIVE Center has had on their perspectives and career paths. Amal stated, "The ALIVE Center has given me a different perspective on nonprofit agencies. The center contributes to positively impacting the lives of teens. Throughout my internship at the ALIVE Center, I was able to gain experience in a non-clinical setting, understand how it works with this population, and compare it to a clinical setting where I plan to work in the future." We are proud to be a beacon of hope and support for teens, helping them to navigate their mental health journey with confidence and resilience. #YouthMentalHealth #ALIVECenter #Resiliency #Leadership #Belonging #Discovery #CommunitySupport #MentalHealthAwareness

Adulthood Pressure: The Impact of "Adulting" Expectations on Teenage Well-being The transition from adolescence to adulthood is a complex and often stressful process. In recent years, there's been a growing emphasis on the concept of "adulting," which places unrealistic expectations on young people to achieve certain milestones at an accelerated pace. This pressure can have a significant impact on teenage well-being. Teenagers are expected to excel academically, secure prestigious internships, and plan their entire career paths while still navigating the complexities of their social and emotional development. The constant pressure to "adult" can lead to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and burnout. It's important to remember that adolescence is a time for exploration, experimentation, and making mistakes. Young people need the freedom to develop at their own pace without the added burden of unrealistic expectations. By fostering a supportive environment that encourages personal growth and resilience, we can help teenagers navigate this challenging period and build a strong foundation for their future. It's crucial to shift the focus from rigid expectations to supporting young people in developing essential life skills, such as problem-solving, decision-making, and emotional intelligence. By empowering teenagers to make informed choices and build their confidence, we can help them transition into adulthood with greater resilience and success. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #health #support #selfcare #mentalhealthawareness #healthylifestyle #adulthood #teenage #wellbeing #newpost #share #Success

2 things I learned reading the article - A day care can benefit the kids in a lot of ways if the day care it self is good. - The employees have to be very positive all the time to have a positive impact on the kids. 2 ways this will help benefit me in my internship - This article helped remind me that at my internship it is very important to stay positive all the time. - It will allow me to be more aware of the needs of the children and how I can help them the best that I can.

Senior at Maple Mountain High School | Intern at Sierra Bonita Elementary School | Aspiring Kindergarten Teacher | Cotton Candy Artist at Lollipuff Cotton Candy
As I mentioned in my last post, I've been working with one of the kindergarten students that has dyslexia at my internship. I've done several different activities with him in order to help him memorize each letter of the alphabet. Sometimes, he'll say the sound of the letter and other times, he'll name the letter. In this article, it talked about how, "Providing specific instruction on how to identify individual sounds in language can help them match these sounds with letters" (Leppert). One of the activities I've done is had him match objects with the letter that they start with. This has been one of the most helpful activities because he is able to associate the first sound of the object with the corresponding letter. The article also talks about different ways to accommodate students with dyslexia, many of which I've noticed applied in Mrs. Marrott's class. One of the suggestions is to have one on one or small group work time with the student. I usually do one on one work with him while I'm there, and I've noticed Mrs. Marrott does as well. Another suggestion is to give simplified instruction, and Mrs. Marrott does a great job at pulling him aside and explaining the directions. #nebointerns #nebo #cteinternships #cteintern #internships #MMHS #mmhsintern #kindergarten #elementaryeducation
