‘Hammer time!’ In one of the F1 races, Lewis Hamilton won, he got a message from his race engineer that he was on course to catch and pass the race leader in several laps. He didn’t quite believe it at first but he ‘put the hammer down’ anyway. Wow! How we’d like to have ‘race engineers’ in our businesses..🤔. But we do actually. They are called Management accountants, and I am one of them 🤗. In accounting to achieve business goals, you’re the driver, I am the race engineer. Your goal is to achieve your business goal. Mine is to help you achieve it by setting up the budgets and cash flow forecasts. Losing power…… I have had a management title since I started working. Manager of General Accounting (glamourous), Director of Finance, Executive Director, Principal, Partner, Managing Partner, Co-Owner. Each new title offered some new power. Some new way of exercising influence, of motivating others, of creating impact. But when you lose the title, do you lose power? If you have lost your job, taken the great leap into a chapter of self-employment, or retired, you know the feeling of losing your title. That moment when you no longer have an esteemed way for defining your place in the world. The season where your answer to “what do you do?” becomes a story rather than a sentence. The time when you can easily begin to feel like you are not only without title but also without power. Or value. Having recently made jumps into a lesser-title or title-less season, I have learned two things. -       How easy it is to fall into the trap of believing that power relies on title or that title bestows power. -       And how real power is about who you are, how you show up, and how you impact others – not about that always-temporary label known as title. Over the past few years, I have walked alongside people and organizations as just Anna Stuart. And have witnessed no less transformation, change, or learning than when I carried a title into my relationships. I have also wondered at how I might have limited my real power by hiding it under a title. And have marveled at the hours I wasted fearing that I would lose power when I had no title.
