A warranty is essentially a contract between you and the manufacturer, promising to repair or replace any mechanical or electrical faults that occur within a specified period. They typically exclude wear and tear items like brake pads and tyres, as well as damage resulting from accidents or misuse. However, it's essential to note that factory warranties come free with a vehicle and cover you for the big-ticket items like engine failure due to a factory fault or a faulty gearbox for example. In contrast, value-added products such as service, maintenance and/or motor plans come with a large price tag. Even though some are still unlawfully built into the price of the vehicle, they are never free. You are still paying for them 100% and it only covers you for relatively inexpensive items like your first few services, brake pads, spark plugs and wiper blades. In the market for a new car? Cautionary tale about using the RAC for any vehicle repairs… On the 15th December I had someone come out to replace the alternator in my Volvo. I’d booked this appointment via the RAC website, clicking on “get a quick quote” and then selecting “repair”. This then takes you to a different website - without any warning - called whocanfixmycar.com, where you put in your postcode and what the problem is, then click confirm. Later on, you get a phone call about this, from an independent garage not owned by the RAC or whocanfixmycar.com, and they (attempt to) carry out the work. Long story short, the lad comes out to fix it, fails to do so, tells his boss he’s done it and marks it off as completed, leaves my car in a totally unusable state over the entirety of Christmas (and still now), and the garage makes no effort to get in touch with me or return my calls. Here’s the best bit. I contacted the RAC who pass the buck onto whocanfixmycar, and they pass the buck onto the garage, who are incommunicado. So the moral of the story here is the “RAC seal of approval” isn’t worth the pixels it’s rendered in, and you’d be well advised to avoid this shoddy “it’s not my responsibility” business model. And here I am, nearly a month later and £540 out of pocket, still asking the question… who can fix my car? UPDATE: It’s been resolved now. The original garage sent someone out to do the job and it has been done successfully. Apparently the original mechanic quit his job over Christmas and told the owner all his outstanding jobs were complete, so I guess I’ll have to take his word on that. Maybe requiring a customer signature to confirm job completion in future is the way to go…
