😍 I have a love/hate relationship with website privacy policies and disclosures 😡 As consumers, we all have to assume that the information we provide to websites and apps (whether voluntarily or collected automatically) is being shared with others -- regardless of what the stated policy may say. But I do appreciate advising businesses who have a sincere respect for privacy and are looking to me for guidance when drafting/updating their policies and disclosures to match their actual use of information. While most consumers won't actually read my handiwork, the process of policy development is a good exercise for businesses to consider and map the types of information that they actually collect from consumers. 😖 I do get frustrated when businesses don't engage professionals to help with their privacy policies and/or are not completely transparent about what information they collect or how they use/share it. Case in point is noted in the recent settlement reached between the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office and Shopgala LLC... Shopgala, a Colorado-based company, was accused of selling visitor information to telemarketers without proper disclosure. The company allegedly collected consumer data from individuals participating in free sample offers or online surveys without transparently informing them of potential third-party sales. As per the settlement, Shopgala agreed to cease selling consumer data without explicit notification, in accordance with federal telemarketing regulations and was fined. Despite the settlement, Shopgala maintains that its website informs visitors about data collection practices and potential uses. #privacypolicy #privacymatters
