This past week Stephen Scherr was fired from the top job at Hertz. He made a huge bet on EVs - buying 100,000 Teslas (and other EVs) - that didnt pay off. That's a shame because the EV industry was hurt badly by poor execution. While I applaud Stephen for making a bold move where many execs would be too scared to, his strategy failed to take into account that EVs are just different than ICE. They charge differently, they require different planning, they require training your staff and they are not for everyone (just yet - mostly due to poor charging infrastructure). He would have been wiser to take a slower approach - finding the right drivers, the right locations and the right Hertz outlets. Find a model of success and the replicating that. Scaling is hard. But its impossible if you don't have a model that works. I see this all the time with software companies - they make 1 sale and then they want to hire a bunch of salespeople and think that will cause the company to grow. It doesnt. Scale happens when your processes and systems lead to predictable outcomes. It happens when you have a clear target customer, clear target market, clear inputs and output from marketing to sales. If your processes dont predict revenue at the small level, don't, DO NOT SCALE. Let this be a lesson for all those who chase growth at all costs. https://lnkd.in/ea4MkP66?

Roughly 11 months ago, we published a contrarian report on rental car company Hertz, suggesting 50-75% downside risk. Since then, the stock is down over 50%, compared the 25% rise in the S&P 500, implying over 75 percentage points of hypothetical alpha. Our bearish thesis was predicated on our expectation of worse than expected pricing pressure (from competition), higher than anticipated depreciation costs (from falling used car prices), and an ill-conceived EV strategy that would prove costly. Since our report, each of these contrarian viewpoints has come to fruition and 2024 consensus EPS expectations have dropped from $1.42 to 41c, catalyzing the 50%+ drop in the share price. At the time of our report, several of our clients asked us why Hertz vs. Avis. In response, we highlighted key differences, including: 1) Hertz was the weakest competitor and likely to suffer share losses to both Avis and Enterprise, and 2) Hertz’ inexperienced leadership team was making costly mistakes, including its aggressive move into EVs and the elongation of its fleet age. These points have since been validated, resulting in the much steeper decline at Hertz, which is down twice as much as Avis (down 24%) since our report.
