The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is a vehicle that stirs strong emotions—both admiration and criticism. Much of the debate revolves around its suspension, a feature beloved by enthusiasts but questioned by skeptics. The Prado has a reputation for instability, particularly when driven at high speeds on winding or uneven roads. Some even joke that its suspension is straight out of a horror movie. However, the Prado isn't designed for racing but for rugged terrain. On off-road tracks, it’s nearly unstoppable, but speeding on paved roads with bumps or sharp turns can feel like a 50-50 gamble between making it home safely or ending up in a ditch. The Prado is one of Toyota’s most diverse models, with various versions that can be difficult to distinguish from one another. In Uganda, there are about seven or eight different Prado variants, including models like TX, TXL, TZ, TZ-G, VX, VXL, and GX. Each version comes with different engine sizes, ranging from modest 2.4L engines to powerful 4.4L V6 engines. Some even share engines with the Toyota Hiace or Hilux Vigo. There used to be a 4.6L V8 Prado, but that was discontinued around 2013. The Prado’s variants don’t just differ in engine size; they also vary in comfort, accessories, and suspension. Petrol Prados are notorious fuel guzzlers, while diesel models, such as the 3.0L D4D or 2.8L turbo-diesels, are more efficient off-road but slower on highways. The TX variant is the most common in Uganda due to its affordability, but it’s also the one most criticized for its bouncy suspension. Built for off-roading, the TX may not be the best option for highway stability, but it's incredibly durable on rough terrain, powered by the reliable 3.0L D4D diesel engine. At the higher end of the spectrum are the TZ-G and VXL models, which are the most luxurious and stable. Politicians favor the VXL because it can keep up with larger Land Cruiser 200 V8s in a convoy, and it’s stable enough to handle both road and off-road emergencies. The diesel models, particularly the 2.8L and 3.0L turbo diesels, offer impressive fuel efficiency, averaging up to 12 km per liter. In contrast, the 4.4L petrol model offers a smoother, faster ride but with significantly higher fuel consumption, as low as 4.5 km per liter. Contrary to popular belief, Prados aren’t inherently unstable. Their suspension is designed for off-road mastery, and they perform well on rugged terrain. The issues arise when drivers attempt to push the off-road suspension to high speeds on highways, expecting it to behave like a sports car. Prado suspensions are built to stretch and compress up to a meter to handle uneven ground, which doesn’t lend itself well to sharp turns at 120 km/h. For those seeking a smoother, more luxurious highway experience, Toyota offers the Lexus lineup, which is geared toward speed and comfort, albeit at a premium price. The Prado, however, remains an off-road beast. Toyota Uganda Limited DAKS TOYOTA UGANDA Toyota Motor Corporation

The great road-going cars they only built once https://lnkd.in/ePfGKw4N Building one-off vehicles is a hugely expensive exercise, but car makers build more of them than you might realise. In the early days of the car, when they were hand-made and based on a separate chassis, it was easy to build one-offs. But the advent of monocoque construction made it much harder to construct a unique car, which is why it's now such a costly business. But every so often a car maker will unveil a road-going machine that's unique, either as a customer commission, a marketing exercise or it could simply be as the basis for a production model which never sees the light of day. Sometimes it's a shame that only the one was made – but sometimes it's not such a bad thing:
