"If it's THAT easy Mark...surely our people will figure it out for themselves?" And yes of course they will. Just make sure you give them NOTHING else to do. Or accept that they need help to do this too. I could never figure this stuff out when I was a full-time engineer. It wasn't until I was forced to work things out...that I could see clearly enough...exactly what needed fixing. I bet your people are in the exact same place I was. Pressure to perform and zero time to figure out what needs fixing first? Those 2 skills... 1. Doing. 2. Figuring out exactly what to do. Are completely different skill sets. I didn't know it then, but I know it now. I wish I'd known earlier. It would have saved a lot of heartache for myself...and for my salespeople. If you're on-the-fence about what to do, if sales are suffering but you don't know why...? I've been there, done it, T-shirt etc etc. On the basis it costs absolutely nothing to find out...gimme a call. I promise I don't bite. Or, very rarely at least. P.S. You CAN wait for your people to figure things out. It just takes too long in this fast moving world. #sales #engineering #manufacturing #ev #automotive

7 Minutes..that's the average human attention span. The average person your engineering/manufacturing company is going to pitch to...has an attention span of a maximum 7 minutes. The average 'pitch deck' your engineering/manufacturing company has prepared is 50 slides. I'll say it again...50 slides. This means, you'll lose them at 7 minutes..but keep on talking and pointing for a further 53 minutes. When you get back to your normal desk and the boss says "how did that go?", you reply..."yeah...it went really well...I got through every slide" Hold the front page...THAT'S NOT what they meant. They meant "how far down the pipeline are we, what needs to happen next, what are our chances of landing this contact?" 'Getting through your overblown pitch-deck' might satisfy you. But the idea was to have some kind of 'emotional reaction' from the prospect. Something that would 'move' them emotionally to consider your company for that next contract. Have your salespeople ever heard of the 'croc brain'? Have they studied this presentation thing? Do they know exactly how it should be done? When did you last train them? What was the last thing they read about 'presenting'? Will this prospect just fade into the background...like all the others did? To thrive in 2024 you'll need to sharpen things up a lot. I get excited when an engineering firm first gets in touch with me. I assume always...that they are pretty good at sales and marketing and are just looking to smarten up their opearation. Because people like me, who are not great at actually running businesses, but are great at helping improve them, love a challenge. We love uncovering things that we know they'll have missed. Showing them a few new tricks they never thought of. And showing them the stuff that I have time to get into...but they don't. Like...for example...crawling into that dark and dusty pointy end of the sales funnel. You know. the bit they are scared to death of...that they never go near. I laugh. Because diving into that dark dusty bit is mostly where their future growth is going to come from. Occasionally I get free reign to go look. When that happens. Magic happens.
