In the pulp and paper sector, a single step in the Kraft pulping process that converts wood into wood pulp is responsible for nearly 1% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Via Separations, a venture-backed climate tech company that is an indirect investee of the Autodesk Foundation portfolio through Prime Coalition, is using its technology to transform industrial separations through an innovative membrane filtration solution – with the goal of eliminating 80-90% of the energy currently used in thermal separations while creating value for industrial customers. We're delighted that @Stuart Gurthrie will be representing #SwecoUK at Autodesk University (#AU24) next week, contributing to what are set to be two fascinating discussions on both supercharging a project's carbon footprint calculation using our new ORIS Materials Intelligence plugin for Autodesk #Civil3D, and the bigger picture challenge of reducing embodied carbon in roads & highways... Session 1: CES3385 | Supercharge a Project’s Carbon Footprint Calculation in Civil 3D with ORIS: Materials Intelligence for Low-Carbon Design | Wednesday, 16 Oct, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM PDT, Location 24C The infrastructure design industry has long struggled to minimise environmental impact. Traditional processes cause inefficiencies, hindering early-stage sustainability prioritisation. ORIS and Sweco solved this by embedding ORIS’s carbon assessment and emissions modeling capabilities into Autodesk Civil 3D software. ORIS’s certified calculator streamlines processes, providing comprehensive impact assessments and quantifying embodied carbon emissions for road designs. The innovative plugin connects drawings to local material sites in ORIS, empowering whole-lifecycle carbon assessments with visualised supply chains. It automates geolocated project generation linked to ORIS’s database, identifies quantities per 3D object for bills of materials, and generates accurate carbon footprints based on required materials. Designers can therefore make informed sustainable-sourcing decisions, reducing emissions while promoting local solutions and recycling. Session 2: CES3692 | Reducing Embodied Carbon in Roads and Highways: A New Data Interchange | Wednesday, 16 Oct, 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM PDT, Location 3 Roads and highways are responsible for more than a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions, with 7.3% of global emissions coming from their construction materials (Architecture 2030). Global regulations and incentives to cut these upfront carbon emissions are growing, including the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act, Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act, and the EU Green Public Procurement. This panel discussion will feature international practitioners and data platform providers who are working to decarbonize roads and highways. Civil 3D software can be a critical piece of this effort, if integrated with sustainability tools. The discussion will cover the opportunities and hurdles faced by engineering companies and technology providers as the infrastructure industry aims to improve its impact on climate change.
