AgTech Ecosystem - join me in giving a big thank you to Team GUSS Automation for helping to spread the opportunity and excitement of AgTech to some of the kids in Sanger Unified. I know how much time and effort it takes to get machinery to the schools and get the kids excited - and it's not like any K-8 kids are coming to work for GUSS this summer. It's also not like a normal event - there's no sales funnel coming out of today's effort for GUSS. So why do you do it, and why do people like me ask so many startups to help? 1) It helps get kids excited about the region they're growing up in, and gives them a feeling they can find an exciting career locally. This increases the chances that growers and dealers will have the talented work force they need to work the cool new robots. 2) It gets kids to think a little more about ag and AgTech. How does this work and what does the robot do that helps the grower? I've done a lot of these events with FFA kids and community college students the past 5 years. It's true that that age group is older than K-8 but many of the questions at the events are the same. Anything we can do to get kids thinking about ag and AgTech careers at any point in their education journey is a good thing. 3) Seeing some cool robots might get them thinking harder about STEM opportunities. All over the US we need more STEM graduates even if they don't come to AgTech later. In some ways GUSS just paid it forward for a bunch of kids that may end up in tech but not at GUSS or even in AgTech. That's the deal, folks - and it's fine, it takes a village and we're raising all the boats with these types of events. 4) Ag and AgTech compete with other segments and we need to recruit. Events like these are great ways for us to recruit effectively. Kids that are enjoying themselves seeing the sprayers and robots live will get a bigger impact than watching it on a screen. AgTech startups that get successful and start to scale will get more reach outs to do these types of events. It's great to see GUSS giving back and it will be fun to see if some of those kids end up working in Sanger or someplace like it in 10 years in part because of today. My big request for startups - if you get asked to participate in these types of STEM events in communities where you operate, consider it part of you becoming successful members of the local community and help if you can. It will pay back in some way at some point - I (can almost) guarantee it!
