🚘 Here is our second post on our Digital Solution for Car Multiverse Integration which is nominated in the Software-Defined Vehicle category of the IT Team Award 2024.      Digital Solution for Car Multiverse Integration – Scalability and Variant Management    The project's history began as a task force at Audi in 2019 with the goal of quickly developing premium vehicles on the E-E platform. Audi had already focused on system components for three years, in partnership development with Porsche, which was subsequently bundled by CARIAD in 2020. The team identified a critical gap: the absence of a comprehensive overall vehicle integration process. Historically, vehicle functions were managed using an Excel list by 300 participants—a method that hindered data analysis and consistent maintenance. This was especially difficult when dealing with approximately 220,000 functional maturity levels across an expanding portfolio of 40 car models adjusted for diverse markets and engine variations.  💡 Our Solution for Car Multiverse Integration: The transition to "MS Azure DevOps" marked a key turn. This tool was selected after extensive evaluation for its performance and capability to manage over 20,000 product variants (40 car models, 9 effect chains, 4 markets, and 8 product modifications). It now supports more than 5,000 users globally within VW Group, handling vast amounts of data including about 10 million tickets and custom fields for role-specific interfaces.   Recognizing that 80% of our users are new to ALM systems, we have developed web-based, role-oriented extensions to enhance user-friendliness. A prime example of this initiative is our Function Portfolio Management approach, which places customer functions at the core of car development and provides a visual framework for this intricate process. A user-friendly matrix visualizes and allows planning or viewing the project status of a function within a few minutes. It streamlines the complexity once managed across various tools, reducing the need for oversight, overplanning, and redundant testing of function maturity levels by 85%. One topic that I’m particularly passionate about is the continuous release of Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs). 🚗💻 It's no longer enough to focus on "better and faster testing." The real game changer lies in well-coordinated workflows between development, integration, and testing. These workflows ensure that complexity is managed efficiently and release cycles are accelerated. However, these workflows are only as good as their foundation: reliable and structured metadata. Without strong metadata to provide transparency and traceability, achieving both quality and speed becomes nearly impossible. I’m looking forward to seeing how these topics are addressed at #CES2025 and exploring the trends shaping the future of mobility.
