Had a thought about the large $200 million Powerball lotto draw tonight. I decided to buy a ticket, first lotto I have ever played. First time I have ever really thought about the game, even though my background is in financial risk and statistics. See the Syndicate method of playing. Everyone pools their money to buy more tickets. There is no difference in expected value by playing through a syndicate, because the price per game is the same, and if you have x% share of the syndicate, you get x% of the winnings. However, you are spreading your bets across a larger number of games, which reduces your variance. The expected value of a lotto game is negative. You WANT variance to win. You do not want to hit the expected value, because that is a loss. Similar to a financial option that you own, you WANT variance. The most you can lose is the price of the ticket, but you have huge upside on the jackpot. But people will still play syndicates because the name sounds fancy. I guess it helps the lottos sell more tickets…..
