The Biden Administration is taking aim at smart cars embedded with Chinese or Russian technology. The Commerce Department says the ban is necessary due to safety concerns. The proposal rolled out Monday would forbid connected cars, with Chinese or Russian software and hardware from being on U.S. roads. The technology used to connect vehicles to the internet for functions like self-driving would be totally prohibited from even being used for test driving. The ban could also extend to auto tech made in other countries deemed hostile to the U.S. The software ban goes into effect in 2027, while the hardware ban goes into effect for the 2029 model year.

Huawei Technologies Co on Tuesday unveiled its upgraded SUV Aito M5, in collaboration with Chinese car maker Seres, in Beijing, as the tech company aims to expand its presence in the increasingly crowded new energy vehicle market. With prices starting at 249,800 yuan ($34,360), the new car is set for mass delivery starting May 15th. The M5 was first unveiled by Huawei in December 2021 as the first vehicle under the Aito brand. The upgraded new M5 features a laser radar system, along with the addition of remote parking functions. Huawei said the upgraded M5 achieved over 10,000 cumulative orders within the first 12 hours of pre-sales. Huawei has highlighted that it will not make the car itself. It has so far adopted two strategies to be a part of the auto supply chain. One is to supply components and technologies to automakers, like its cooperation with Changan Auto, said Zhong Shi, an independent auto analyst. "The other is the intelligent car selection mode. Huawei not only participates in product modeling, interior design and intelligent solutions, but is also responsible for the marketing and sale of cars. A typical example is its cooperation with traditional car brands, such as Aito, which has proved to be successful," Zhong said. During the launch event, Yu Chengdong, chairman of Huawei's intelligent automotive solutions business unit, highlighted Huawei's significant investment in intelligent driving technology, and said Huawei's high-end intelligent driving solutions priced below 300,000 yuan are sold at a loss. Yu also revealed that the first product resulting from Huawei's partnership with BAIC Group is named the Stelato S9. Expected to hit the market around July or August of 2024, the Stelato S9 is positioned as Huawei's inaugural luxury sedan, competing with the products of international brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi. ➡️more information about AITO M5 SUV https://lnkd.in/deznBvwe ➡️News link>>> https://lnkd.in/dh9FX235

Samsung delivers 600-mile #solidstate EV battery as it teases 9-minute charging and 20-year lifespan tech. Samsung has been shipping its solid-state battery with high energy density to electric vehicle makers, but warns that it will first land in more expensive models. It is also ready to deliver other promising battery technologies. Both Toyota and Samsung have vowed to begin mass solid-state battery production in 2027, and Toyota, too, advised that it will be installing them in premium electric cars under the Lexus brand first. A 20-year endurance and the corresponding warranty seem to be an upcoming battery standard, as CATL and others have already announced such "million-mile" batteries. Could not say it better. What is outrageous is the false promised made by the likes of Musk and others relative to how "FSD was going to save lives"...or "driving a car without FSD is like having a horse". Sorry Mr. Musk but I will trust 1000 times over a horse, even a spirited one, rather than your FSD (oh available any nanosecond now)... The tallest obstacle relative to FSD is testing. How can you be sure that you have tested your integrated system robustly enough such that it can deal with every situation. And when I say every situation, I mean the billions of different events that can happen on roads every day in the street of a single city, plus weather interference, plus degradation of said integrated system (loss of one or more sensors...then what?), etc etc...you simply cannot reach the needed testing level to satisfy the requirement of a real-time, life critical, mission critical system. Period. And that is for at least a damning reason: when you have finished your testing suite, you have no idea what you have NOT tested for!

We had a live, smooth experience of a level-4 (L4) self-driving ride with Pony.ai in Beijing, with a follow-up discussion with the team. Some interesting takes were: 1. We recognize multiple structural barriers against OEMs to achieve L4 autonomous driving by themselves. 2. L4-L5 self-driving can be achieved with little involvement of communications (5G, 6G, etc.) with servers. Rather, remote communications would create an extra layer of latency and become another source of potential error. 3. Some upheavals in the auto semiconductor space are ongoing but significant switching costs exist for certain core functionalities. In this trip, we spoke with management and industry participants in the EV, self-driving and auto-semiconductor companies in China. We expect to share more in investor letters. * In this 40-second video, you can see how conservatively the algorithm deals with an unexpected obstacle on the road.
