Could tech giants one day displace OEMs? This is very interesting and very real. And the question worth pondering is this: "what is the more difficult route, an automotive OEM developing the technology required for the future consumer or tech giants developing the manufacturing skills needed for mass market automotive applications?" #automotive #techinnovation #dealerships #automotiveOEM #ExperienceFirst #Keyloop

Automotive Industry 1. Analyze the network position of an automobile OEM such as Ford in the ICE value chain. Actors: suppliers, consumers, deliverers, the marketing organization that advises on improving customer services, market researchers, and shareholders. It also includes competitors such as General Motors and Toyota. Resources: Tangible: employees, engineers, materials, technology, and financial Intangible: brand equity, workforce skills, and time. Activities: This involves a wide range of activities, such as researcher development, advertising, sponsorship, and sales development. 2. How might the EV tech affect the resources and activities in the value chain network and, consequently, the network position of ICE auto OEM? By looking at the increase of electric vehicles due to the rapid development of technology, the typical needs for consumers owning a car have significantly shifted. This is displayed through the value chain network as there is still a demand for engines and transmissions, which are vital components of the car. However, there is also a need for advanced electronics and batteries to meet the needs of upcoming EV tech. This creates issues for suppliers as they must adapt to the new car parts to keep up with emerging players in the market and not fall behind. Also, due to the R&D being expensive for the new tech, it is also a risk for companies to buy these parts due to constant uncertainties regarding the demand for EVs as they have only recently been released into the market. 3. How can suppliers overcome the threat of EVs? To enhance market competitiveness, companies should focus on product development through R&D to create innovative car models, especially as they are dealing with electric vehicles. They must also modernize manufacturing processes to improve labor efficiency in parts production. Key actors include factories that supply parts and dealerships, which should receive incentives to boost promotions and gather customer feedback. Additionally, optimizing the supply chain is crucial for reducing costs and improving production efficiency, as traditional car manufacturing relies on numerous components. What do you think about Ford’s CEO moving towards vertical integration? Insanely difficult in an industry full of legacy processes and relationships, to put it lightly. But IMO, the right move. Tesla has been vertically integrated from the get go. Here the Ford CEO says their next gen cars will follow some of that same logic, specifically software. 💯 Is vertical integration too threatening to the industry’s supply chain? Or, is it a necessary strategy for manufacturers to remain competitive going forward?
