OEMs Want Cars Moved Faster, But Are They Compensating Transporters? 💥 (From a conversation at a conference in Las Vegas last month). "There was a lot of talk with the OEMs about trying to get their cars moved quicker. (I wasn't aware that that is such a problem, but it is). But the transporters actually got up and said to them, 'You want us to invest all this money. But you know you're not compensating us for it'. So hopefully the OEMs heard what the transporters were saying. That was a big discussion there. They're talking about it all comes down to how fast we can get the cars delivered. They're all concerned about that." ▶ UK LCV market received new plate boost in March - The UK’s new-LCV market grew by 11.1% last month with the help of the country’s plate-change effect. A total of 52,916 units took to the roads, making it the best March for LCV deliveries since 2021. - Deliveries of new LCVs under two tonnes gross-vehicle weight (GVW) climbed by 44.8% year on year. Vans in the weight category between 2.5-3.5 tonnes experienced growth of 16.1%, making up 67.3% of the market. - Meanwhile, registrations of pickups increased by 0.1% compared with March 2023. This meant that all but one LCV segment recorded growth. Vans between two tonnes and 2.5 tonnes GVW saw the only fall in March, with registrations down 3.6% year on year. - Twice a year, the numbers on UK registration plates for new vehicles change, to denote the delivery time period. Between March and August 2024, new cars and vans will feature a ‘24’ plate. Then between September and February 2025, a ‘74’ plate will be used. - Many buyers will time their vehicle deliveries to take advantage of these new plates. GM is recalling more than 323,000 heavy-duty pickups because their tailgates can fall open unexpectedly. Affected vehicles include 2020 - 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, Chevrolet Silverado 3500, GMC Sierra 2500 and GMC Sierra 3500. The recall applies only to pickups with a manual tailgate with power lock and release, which have an exterior touchpad switch. A "Stop Sale" has been ordered until the trucks can be repaired. According to NHTSA, water can trickle into the electronic gate-release switch, causing a short circuit. That electric malfunction can cause the gate to unlatch, potentially spilling the bed’s contents. #recallmasters

"I've seen gluts not followed by shortages, but I've never seen a shortage not followed by a glut." The Black Swan author Nassim Taleb's aphorism was cited by Carvana CEO Ernie Garcia in a talk he gave this week to the Automotive Press Association. Garcia was talking about new car production, and the prospects for greater vehicle availability and lower prices in the used car market. He noted automakers are boosting incentives and offloading more new cars to fleet buyers like rental companies to relieve pressure on inventories. “There will likely be much more car production and that will probably bode well” for the online used-car retailer, the CEO told myself and other reporters. Deutsche Bank points out that average industry new car inventories in the US at the end of April climbed to 50 days’ worth of supply, two days more than in March and 17 days higher than a year ago. Some carmakers have more than double the industry average number of unsold vehicles clogging dealer lots. Overproduction has long been the hobgoblin of the auto industry. In the wake of Covid-era factory shutdowns, car industry leaders in the US spoke of a new discipline to keep supply in line with (or slightly behind) demand. The ol' factory "push system" was to be replaced by a consumer-led "pull system" to keep the car market balanced and prices stable. But as Garcia notes, inventories are creeping up.
