In response to the sharp increase in auto import duties for Chinese automakers by the US, Liu Bin, chief expert of China Automotive Technology & Research Center (CATARC) and deputy director of China Automotive Strategy and Policy Research Center, has advised that China should raise its import tariffs on large gasoline-powered cars to 25%. The current import tariff for cars in China is 15%. He believes that this adjustment would help balance domestic and international markets and support a policy push toward green and low-carbon development. Origin is such a major factor in Customs efficiency which this interesting article on the UK automotive manufacturing sector highlights. It’s just a shame accumulation has been made possible to protect the UK and EU automotive sector, and yet the same does not apply to any other manufacturing sector that I know of at least. As long as the parts come from the two customs areas to meet the threshold of the UK & EU Trade Agreement, surely that has to be a positive for jobs and innovation for businesses in both? #export #import #manufacturing #automotive

I’ve spoken previously about China’s growing FDI in Mexico and the back door initiative to circumvent U.S. tariffs by importing goods into the U.S. via Mexico. It is a critical issue that needs to be addressed in the forthcoming USMCA renegotiation. President Trump has recently stated he will impose 25% tariffs on Mexican imports his first day back in office. This would be detrimental to U.S. consumers and manufacturers. But is this simply the “Art of the Deal” - i.e. Trump’s negotiating tactic to address Chinese imports, among other issues with Mexico?
