Multinacionales con España (which I invite you to follow) has released its report "Foreign investment in figures" for the year 2023, with data closed until the end of the year. Spain has closed the year with a 10% decrease on investment flows compared to the previous year, and greenfield investments (i.e. new projects) only account for 19%, contrary to what happens in the Region of Murcia, where this type of project is the majority. The unstable world economy, and above all, the fact that 2022 was a milestone in the historical series, make this decline understandable. Even so, it is above the average of the last five years. Conflicts in Europe and the Middle East make the international investment landscape quite unstable, and global flows also had a decline of 1.8%, according to the UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) report. If you want to read the full report Multinacionales con España makes it available on the following link: https://lnkd.in/emRiEhKg Congratulations to this Association for making this type of reports about international economic context and foreign investment.

In 2023, Mexico had the lowest foreign direct investment as a proportion of domestic product (GDP) in the last decade, reported María Consuelo Pérez, general director of S&P Global Rating LATAM. FDI last year represented less than 0.3 percent of GDP, the lowest level since 1012, she said at a meeting of the American Society of Mexico earlier this week. In 2023, new investments accounted for only 13% of the total FDI, while a staggering 74% came from the reinvestment of profits by companies already operating in Mexico. This trend continued into the first six months of 2024, with the share of new investments dropping even further to just 3%. "The evidence we have on nearshoring shows that it has been slow and not that accelerated, and expectations are high for Mexico," Ms. Perez said. Pérez emphasized the need for the government to focus on generating clean energy, addressing the water crisis, and ensuring a sufficient supply of trained personnel to attract foreign companies and take full advantage of the nearshoring opportunity. Other experts attending the (AmSoc) event echoed her sentiments, noting that issues related to security, the rule of law, and inadequate infrastructure pose significant barriers to increasing foreign investment in Mexico. These challenges must be addressed to create a more favorable environment for attracting international businesses. The declining share of new investments and the low FDI as a percentage of GDP raise questions about the long-term sustainability and impact of the current investment trends in Mexico. Moreover, the uncertainty surrounding the government's proposed judicial reforms and other constitutional bills could further dampen foreign investment in the country.

We came across this insightful piece by Fernando Brun, Argentine Ambassador to Germany, in LA NACION shedding light on Argentina's significant role in the global knowledge economy and sustainable energy. 🇦🇷🔍 Here are the highlights: 🦄 The Argentine knowledge economy is thriving, constituting 5.4% of the nation's GDP and registering nearly $8000 million in exports in 2022. Notably, it claims the highest per capita rate of tech unicorns in Latin America. 🌞 With a remarkable 40% surge in clean energy investments, particularly in solar, Argentina is poised to emerge as a leader in energy security, with a keen focus on low-carbon hydrogen. 🇩🇪 Collaborating with Germany opens doors to exciting opportunities. Following the launch of German Accelerator's Buenos Aires office last November, we're excited to foster deeper Argentine-German business ties, unlocking new avenues for collaborative innovation and growth. Ambassador Brun's article in "La Nación" is not just about numbers; it's a vision of a future driven by innovation and resilience. The journey towards endless possibilities has just begun! El Economista By Lilia González Friday, June 7, 2024 “ Executive Council of Global Companies asks for certainty from investments The Executive Council of Global Companies said that Mexico is going through a crucial economic and political moment, so the decisions that are taken in the future will be decisive for the future of the country in the coming decades.” …… “ The Executive Council of Global Companies (CEEG) seeks to be an ally in the formation of the National Development Plan of the new administration that will be led by Claudia Sheinbaum, but investors demand commitment to the rule of law, legal certainty and security.” …… …… More than 60 large companies that operate in different countries and have a solid presence in Mexico participate in the CEEG. These companies, leaders in more than 20 sectors of the economy, represent 40% of foreign direct investment, promote national supply chains, generate 10% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and are committed to innovation and the development of national talent.” ….. https://lnkd.in/gh_rYCGh

🌎📈 What leads Spanish companies to invest more in some Latam countries than in others? After participating in IE University's Panorama de Inversión Española en Iberoamérica event, this is the most interesting question I have. 🇲🇽 Mexico and 🇵🇪 Peru are particularly attractive for their networks of trade agreements, while Mexico is also highly competitive in the regional context, closely followed by 🇨🇴 Colombia. Colombia leads in terms of the quality of the labor force, while Peru's attractiveness is mostly due to its commodities. 🇧🇷 Brazil only leads in terms of the size of its domestic market and doesn’t appear in any of the other indicators of competitive advantage explored in the study. Congratulations to IE University professor Juan Carlos Martínez Lázaro who leads the project.
