Being a hungry college student is not some witty right of passage into adulthood. It's an injustice. Food is a human right. SNAP is a critical program in supporting college students as they pursue higher education. Check out this amazing article to learn more about how SNAP can continue to support college students. Also, shout out to Anya Rose for your work in this space!
"FRAC recently interviewed college students about food insecurity and participants reported that when they went hungry, they experienced changes in their weight, declining health, and/or falling grades, said FRAC's Irene Lewis, MPA. Conversely, when those students had access to programs like SNAP that helped them meet their food needs, 'they were able to show up to class and be eager to participate and they weren’t worried or stressed about where their next meal was coming.'" https://lnkd.in/dGJ3uHfW

If you and/or your organization have not signed the letter on the link below, please consider reviewing it and doing so and sharing it with your contacts. The deadline to sign is April 26, 2024. The Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer program (Summer EBT) would provide over 2 million hungry children in Florida with roughly $259 million in federal food assistance next summer. Although Florida chose not to participate in Summer EBT for 2024, it is not too late for the state to administer Summer EBT next year. But time is running out. The deadline for Florida to tell USDA that it plans to administer 2025 Summer EBT is August 15, 2024. Bread for the World (https://lnkd.in/ejYZxTfx) and Florida Impact (https://lnkd.in/emve4wH3) are leading a request that state leaders meet the federal deadline and ensure Florida participates in 2025 Summer EBT. Add your organization to the letter by completing the form on this webpage: https://lnkd.in/eRw53VQ5 The deadline to sign the letter is April 26.

In the summer, nutritional access for America’s youth often becomes jeopardized, impacting many communities of color. With access to nutritional foods all year round, children can lead healthy and joyful lives. The new Summer Nutrition Programs (SUN Programs) by the Biden-Harris Administration aims to give families more opportunities to obtain nutritional support for their children. Eligible families are offered grocery benefits that can be used at an array of grocers across the country. The USDA estimates that 21 million children will benefit from this new program alone. USDA summer nutrition programs bring us one step closer to a world in which Black children and their families have supportive access and are given the opportunity to maintain health and access culturally relevant foods. Join us in commending this important investment in Black children. Learn more about the new program here: https://bit.ly/4bCaLRB

Did you know that last year, Minnesota food shelf visits reached an astounding 7.5 million—and this number continues to rise? Hunger is not just a personal hardship; it's a policy choice. At Second Harvest Heartland, we’re working every day to make sure people understand that their vote is a tool to help end hunger. At the Minnesota State Fair, our advocacy team had powerful conversations with attendees who were eager to connect the dots between hunger, policy, and voting. For many, it was eye-opening to see how their vote could directly impact policies related to food insecurity. This is why advocacy is crucial to our work—it not only educates the public but empowers them to drive change. Your voice can help change these policies. Pledge to vote, and together, we can create a future where no one goes hungry. Join us by pledging to vote today: https://bit.ly/47kDs4e #HungerIsAPolicyChoice

What does #SchoolMealsForAll really mean in CA? We break down how the $1.85B gets to work in this post:
We are thrilled to share that Governor Newsom has signed AB 107, which secures $1.85 billion in the 2024–2025 #CABudget to continue #SchoolMealsForAll! This funding will: 🍎 Serve an estimated 885 million school meals to California’s TK–12 students during the upcoming school year, an increase of 60 million meals. 👩🍳 Provide a state reimbursement of nearly $1 per meal, supporting the procurement of high-quality food and sustaining school nutrition labor in California. 👩👩👦👦 Ensure free school meals for the 44% of food-insecure families in California who do not qualify for federal free or reduced-price meals We are grateful to Governor Gavin Newsom and the #CALeg. California leads the way on school meals nationally thanks to leaders like you forging new pathways to fighting child hunger! We also extend our gratitude to the 150+ organizations, especially the incredible school nutrition professionals, who signed on to support School Meals for All this year. You did it! Thank you!

In 2020, the USDA issued waivers to allow schools to provide meals at no charge to all children, no matter their household income. Two years later, these waivers expired, leaving students from struggling families who do not meet the federal eligibility threshold for free meals hungry. Today, only eight states have passed official policies that provide free school meals to all students, regardless of household income. While there is strong public support of free school meals in many other states, they have yet to pass legislation.
