I used to think people cared about why they were doing something. Then I had an experience that showed me that some people actually couldn't care less. After I graduated college, my university invited me back as a guest sound designer for one of their spring productions. I was thrilled as it was the biggest sound design opportunity I had to date. One of the novel aspects of this role as a guest designer was that I had an audio engineer who handled all the technical aspects of the audio system in the theatre so I could focus on the sound effects and artistry of what we were creating. Previously I was always my own audio engineer. So I set to work figuring out what I wanted from the show. I gave an initial sound plot to my audio engineer and she worked with her team to install speakers in the appropriate locations and make the system capable of what I needed. One day I was out in the house working on the sound effects and the audio engineer came to me to ask which way the speakers onstage should be oriented. I told her how I wanted the speakers to face, and was just about to explain what I was trying to accomplish when she walked away to keep working. It was shocking to me at the time that someone could complete their work purely based off of simple instruction without understanding the end goal. Understanding why was always critical to me growing up, I practically couldn't do anything unless I understood the intention behind it. I discovered that I could drastically simplify communication with most people. The ones who actually care why will usually ask, so there's no use boring the people who don't. -------- If you found this insightful, consider re-sharing ♻️ and follow me to continue seeing posts about innovation and automation in engineering firms. #Innovation #Leadership #Communication #Collaboration #Creativity #Automation #AECIndustry

When planning an outdoor event, one production mistake that can significantly impact the experience is ignoring the acoustics of the venue. Unlike indoor venues, outdoor spaces can have unpredictable sound dynamics due to the open environment. Here’s how to avoid this: 1. Sound Mapping: Conduct a sound mapping exercise during the planning phase to understand how sound travels in the venue. This helps identify potential problem areas. 2. Quality Sound Equipment: Invest in high-quality sound equipment designed for outdoor use. This includes powerful speakers and microphones that can handle ambient noise. 3. Professional Sound Technician: Hire a professional sound technician who can adjust sound levels in real-time and ensure consistent audio quality throughout the event. Addressing the acoustics can ensure that your event’s sound quality is impeccable, enhancing the overall experience for your guests. At WML, we fine-tune every detail so your outdoor events really hit the mark. Want to ensure your next event sounds perfect? Get in touch with us at WML, and let’s hit all the right notes together. #EventManagement #eventmanager #eventmanagementcompany #eventmanagers #unforgettablemoments #eventvenue #eventlogistics #corporateevents #eventstyle #eventinspiration #eventindustry #experientialmarketing #brandpromotion #brandexperience #brandactivation #ukbusiness #ukbusinesses #eventdecor #eventprofsuk #glasgowbusiness #scottishbusiness

Almost every AV Technician, Sound engineer, or Event manager looks forward to improve the quality of their sound output. Here are some tips for improving sound quality in your setup: *Recording/Playback: 1. Use high-quality microphones and preamps. 2. Record in a quiet, treated room. 3. Choose lossless or high-bitrate compression. 4. Use a digital audio workstation (DAW) for editing. *Equipment Upgrades: 1. Invest in quality speakers or headphones. 2. Upgrade amplifiers or audio interfaces. 3. Consider a DAC (digital-to-analog converter). 4. Replace low-quality cables and connectors. *Acoustic Treatment: 1. Use acoustic panels for echo reduction. 2. Add bass traps for low-end control. 3. Optimize speaker placement. 4. Treat room reflections. *Digital Signal Processing: 1. Use EQ to balance frequencies. 2. Adjust compression for dynamic range. 3. Apply reverb/delay judiciously. 4. Experiment with audio enhancement plugins. *Calibration and Settings: 1. Calibrate your monitoring system. 2. Adjust playback settings (e.g., buffer size). 3. Optimize streaming quality. 4. Use audio analysis tools. *General Tips: 1. Keep equipment clean and maintained. 2. Use balanced cables. 3. Avoid distortion. 4. Reference high-quality audio. *My Specific Recommendations: For your Xenyx QX1832USB mixer: 1. Update firmware. 2. Adjust gain staging. 3. Use built-in EQ and compression. 4. Invest in quality speakers/headphones. ➡️ An International Voice | Providing BROADCAST QUALITY Voice Over Services from my HOME STUDIO | Commercial, Corporate Narration, E-Learning, Character Voices, Audiobooks & More ⬇️
Is it your job to make the #engineers life easier? Well of course the answer to that question is YES! But it's also more complicated then that for the modern VO. In an age where many #Voiceovers are working almost entirely from their own #homestudios, many of us think we know what a sound engineers job entails. Until we get into a high end #recording studio, see the myriad of nobs and buttons, and realise the complexities of knowing about recording, not only the human voice, but everything. As someone who works with a range of #clients, from big #corporate organisations with in house media teams who want raw, unprocessed audio; to small #international clients who consist of teams of one, the end product can often be requested in many different forms. So how do we make the engineers life easier? ✅ Well first of all, let's get the basics right. Clean, raw, unprocessed audio with a low noise floor, recorded in a space that is as non reflective as possible. That's the biggest and best goal to work towards. Processing is something that most clients will want to do after the fact, whether that's EQ, Compression or even noise reduction. So aim for the best sound possible without having to do anything at source. ✅ Then of course there is #performance elements that come into play, #microphone technique, #breathing properly, plosives and proximity are all things that, of course someone can correct you on...but it's our job to be friends with the mic. To know how to use it, to master it, to perform for it. And bad breathing and plosives may not ruin a recording, but they can certainly make someones life a lot harder in the edit. ✅ And then of course we have all things files...naming, labelling, format, sample rate, quality and the rest! Different people work with different things, so make sure if you're sending audio to people, you know the file type and sample rate they want to receive. And of course we haven't even touched on #recording levels, home studio #equipment and asking the client the right questions before you step into the booth. So there is a world of things to know to make your #audio #engineers life easier. Any engineers out there want to chime in and tell us VO's what you want? Looking for a male voiceover with a global sound? Head over to sbvoices.co.uk or drop me a DM.
