With her privileged background, Mridula could done many exciting things - which she perhaps does on the side! - but she has decided to get her skin deep into climate tech. Mridula is an active climate advocate and thought leader, known for her efforts in climate action and waste/water management. She is the founder of the Sundaram Climate Institute, which focuses on developing solutions for waste, water, and sustainability in India. Her work emphasizes localized solutions for climate adaptation and mitigation, making her a pivotal figure in promoting climate tech innovation. Mridula is an active angel investor in the cleantech space through her association with The Chennai Angels, with a portfolio that includes over 25 climate tech startups. She is also the Joint Managing Director of Southern Roadways Limited and the Executive Director of Sundaram Textiles, where she has implemented many sustainability initiatives. Oh, and it doesn't stop there. She is an award-winning author, having written critically acclaimed books such as The Climate Solution and Watershed, both of which focus on climate change and water management in India. Her work has been recognized for bringing practical and implementable insights into India's climate crisis. She serves on the Board of Trustees for WWF India and is the Chairperson of the Board of Governors at NIT Andhra Pradesh. Mridula is frequently invited as a speaker at national and international climate forums, contributing to policy discussions on climate change and sustainable development. The Future Tech Summit 2024's Panel 3 on "Future Planet" explored how technology can help us build a sustainable future. Moderated by Vaibhav Agarwal, CEO of IntelliCon Technologies, the discussion brought together a diverse group of experts who shared their insights: Dr. Neelima Alam (Associate Head - Climate, Energy and Sustainable Technology): Dr. Alam emphasized the importance of advancement in technology for effectively synthesising all the renewable sources of energy, particularly water, so as to become a carbon neutral nation by 2070, as per COP 26. She explained the role of the Department of science and technology for the nation; to integrate the use of technology in every sphere of life. She made the audience aware of all the initiatives and efforts DST made for the same, and their indefatigable support to startups engaged in initiatives aligned to their ethos. Mr. Manoj Gupta (EVP and Business Head, JBM Group):  JBM Group being a leader in the electric vehicle (EV) space, Mr. Gupta focused on the critical role of sustainable transportation in building a greener future. He highlighted the importance of e-mobility and the development of robust charging infrastructure as key drivers of change. Beyond e-mobility, Mr. Gupta emphasized the importance of building sustainable and green infrastructure across various sectors. Ms. Smita Pandey Mishra (Founder, Fandoro Technologies Pvt Ltd ): Ms. Mishra championed the need for clean and ethical businesses that prioritize transparency and operate ethically. She advocated for sustainable business practices that improve the overall business climate and create products and conduct activities that leverage sustainability for the environment. Ms. Mishra emphasized that startups should be founded to solve real-world problems, not simply chase lucrative opportunities. Businesses built on addressing genuine needs are more likely to be sustainable in the long run. The panel stressed upon the importance of collaboration between scientists, engineers, policymakers, and businesses to leverage technology for building a greener future, as well as the need to develop clean and transparent businesses that are sustainable in the business space as well as for the environment. Overall, the Future Planet panel painted a hopeful picture of a sustainable future powered by innovation, ethical business practices, and a focus on solving real-world problems. This future can be achieved through collaboration between scientists, engineers, policymakers, and businesses, with a shared commitment to developing clean and transparent businesses that are not only sustainable in the marketplace but also for the environment. Adsorbi Secures €1M to Launch Pilot Air Purification Plant 🌍✨ Swedish climate tech startup Adsorbi, a spinout from Chalmers University of Technology, has raised €1M in funding to scale its cellulose-based air purification material. The funding comes from Metsä Spring, Chalmers Ventures, Jovitech Invest, and a grant from Sweden’s Innovation Agency. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗔𝗱𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗯𝗶 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴? First Industrial Revolution (1760-1840): Steam power and mechanized production revolutionized agriculture, textiles, and transportation, spurring urbanization. 2. Second Industrial Revolution (1870-1914): Electricity, steel, and chemical industries emerged, with inventions like the telephone and combustion engine reshaping industries. 3. However, cities also account for almost 60% of all carbon emissions, making it vital to build inclusive, sustainable, safe and resilient cities for our overall well-being and global sustainable development goals. New and emerging technologies such as digital, AI and IoT can play an important role in achieving this objective. That's why this year’s IBM Sustainability Accelerator is focusing on UN Sustainable Development Goal 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities. We are inviting NGOs and government departments to submit tech-driven proposals that will support urban communities who are vulnerable to environmental challenges.
