Ventech generated a whopping 36x ROI on its exit of Believe, returning €175 million to investors in its third fund. In a time where LPs are thirsty for liquidity the exit has helped convince LPs to return for the firm's sixth flagship fund targeting €225 million. "A good 75 percent of the fund are returning investors," firm president and managing partner Jean Bourcereau told me. "We had a few [LPs] ask for distributions so they could recommit, so that's what we've done." Ventech has also completed a number of other exits in the past six months, including a secondary sale of 30 percent of its stake in content delivery platform developer Antidot for a 2x multiple. In Q1, the market for late-stage VC fundings almost disappeared entirely, as Adam Lewis writes. There were only 13 Series D deals on Carta the whole quarter (which works out to one per week), and just 14 more deals at Series E and beyond. It was a tough time to be a late-stage founder trying to raise new money from VCs. Q2 was better. Deal count more than doubled at Series D, and it also ticked back up at Series E+. These figures are something of a snapshot of the VC market as a whole: After a few quarters of steep declines in deal activity, it's looks like the market might have hit a bottom and has again begun to ascend. “Pitchbook data tracking 12,000 VC funds raised from years 2000 to 2014 showed less than 3% lost capital and had negative DPI. Only 1 out of 50 reached a 5x multiple.” The Takeaway here is a very low loss rate with a shot at good upside performance. My VC funds are at 4.5x and with pending exits and up-round financings this year we are heading into 6x and 7x territory and have a way to go. Great episode as always with the very cool Harry Stebbings who revealed David has not invested in a new VC manager in the past 6 years and is in the business of re-upping into the same 12 VC fund managers. Very impressive!
