Please join us in congratulating Ronald Bleday, MD, the Research All-Star surgeon of the week. Dr. Bleday is the Vice Chair for Quality and Patient Safety in the Department of Surgery and Section Chief in the Division of Colorectal Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and in the Top 5% of surgeons conducting research in GI surgery. "One of our core missions in research at Mass General Brigham is to uncover operational methods that enhance patient care. For instance, our analysis of many surgical cases pinpointed key factors leading to post-surgical complications. The insights gained drove us to adopt ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) protocols. Consequently, through standardization and adherence by surgeons, we've seen an 83% decrease in surgical site infections. This initiative has also significantly lowered the incidence of embolisms and reduced prolonged use of narcotics post-surgery. These outcomes exemplify how dedicated research directly translates into tangible improvements in patient health and recovery." Even if the title of a research study states that joint arthroplasty patients have been studied and an abstract refers to joint arthroplasty, if the hospital studied has three surgeons who performed 80% of those cases, what has been studied are three surgeons' patients. We showed that variability among surgeons in their contributions to incremental costs associated with perioperative complications only slightly exceeds the variability of those incremental costs among surgical categories. Consequence: perioperative surgical home and enhanced recovery research results involving single institutions and a small number of surgeons are generalizable to other hospitals and healthcare systems. https://lnkd.in/gdksx3im

Co-Founder, CEO, Managing Partner at Back Bay Life Science Advisors, and a founding member of the DNB // Back Bay Partnership for Healthcare.
I spent my academic clinical life in cardiovascular medicine and surgery. I have also spent much of my professional business life advising and developing medical technology companies. MedTech is an interesting aspect of healthcare development and investing - it is responsible for quantum and incremental improvements in patient care and the health of patient-serving hospital systems. The following case record (CPC) of my academic alma mater, the Massachusetts General Hospital in the recent New England Journal is worth the read for the extraordinary, sequential progress we have made in the care of critical cardiac disease. 25 years ago an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, witnessed or otherwise, had no real chance of survival. The story that follows is an amalgam of diagnostic, interventional, pharmacologic, engineering, surgical, cardiologic, and nursing care triumphs and reminds us all of the power of aggregate invention, innovation, and excellent healthcare delivery. https://lnkd.in/eTT4Ag8E

Over the 2022-23 academic year, our senior design team collaborated with medical professionals to address unmet clinical needs. CRNA Jane Swing, from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), identified a critical issue in monitored anesthesia care (MAC) cases. Hypoxemia affects over 3 million surgical patients annually, highlighting the need for innovative solutions. Enter AnesthEZ, a foam pillow with a rigid set of arms designed to enhance patient oxygen saturation levels during surgery by proactively positioning the neck and mandible. This design prevents hypoxemia and aims to reduce postoperative complication rates, ultimately improving patient outcomes. AnesthEZ's adjustable mandible and jaw holders offer a practical and effective approach compared to manual methods, potentially revolutionizing airway patency maintenance in clinical settings. Thank you to Jane Swing, Minhyun Shin, Sam Rubin, Jack DeWaele, and Colton Pereyo' for their hard work and support throughout the project. #MedicalInnovation #HealthcareTechnology #PatientCare #Anesthesia

Did you know that ever first Netherlands Sectorplan about healthcare is launched? I am very appreciatively belong to this sectorplan. My one day of week work at surgery department, Erasmus MC belongs to this sectorplan. I particulary belong to the theme of “Data-driven innovation”. To share about what the sectorplan is: UMCs (Universitair Medische Centra, Netherlands Univeristy Medical Centers) will receive a 40 million euros per year for 8 years! This is to accelerate healthcare innovation research and education in the Netherlands. Together with partners in the knowledge sector, the business community and the region, and through collaborating between UMCs, scientific researchers will contribute to accelerate their contributions on healthcare in three themes: prevention, data-driven innovation, and from fundamental research to clinic and practice.
